Can I use old volunteer experience on scholarship applications?

I have quite a bit of volunteer experience, but all of it is from over 3 years ago. Can I still use that experience to apply for scholarships or is it too old to be relevant? #scholarships #volunteering #scholarship #volunteer

Thank you comment icon Hi Emma! I often put my old volunteer experience on my applications, even if it is a few years back. I think it shows whoever is reviewing your application that you have a background in volunteering and that you didn't just cram a bunch of volunteer hours to qualify for a scholarship. Hope this helps! Albert

Yes! In fact, most colleges encourage it, and some even require it. Start with something that you’re interested. It looks much better to spend your time with an organization and/or cause that you’re passionate about than to volunteer just for the sake of logging hours. Think outside the box. Contact local organizations/businesses that specialize in the field you’re going into. With that, you’re getting such a multitude of experiences!

Pam’s Answer

Hello! I absolutely would put your volunteer experience on your applications for scholarships. It shows whomever is reviewing your application that you are well-rounded and care to give back to the community. Even if it was over 3 years ago, you can highlight how important it was in your life if there is an essay or long-answer section if there are any questions asked with respect to an experience you have had in your life that was relevant to you.

Good luck!

Lory’s Answer

Absolutely! I'm currently on a Scholarship committee and a portion of our application requests information on the candidates volunteer background. We look back 4-8 years as H.S. & Undergrad information is acceptable. We see a wide variety of volunteer work which helps determine several things: leadership skills, team work, willingness to follow through, how this individual values the community and will continue to give back in the future. Volunteering is selfless and the further back your experience, the more telling of your character. It would also be beneficial to include recent volunteer experience to show this is something you intend to continue.
