Hi Crystal,
PwC has an interesting free program that can help you build your leadership skills.

I think these two ressource might specifically resonate with you:
Career Readiness curriculum- can help understand who you are, focus on where you want to go, and rethink how you approach the career search process
Mentoring program- where you can sign up for a small pod of collegiate peers and PwC professionals focused on building community and supporting you along your career journey.

Yves’s Answer

Hi Crystal,

I can help you with the leadership question less with financial management.
When thinking of a great leader which persons pop into your mind first? What makes them special and why are they a great leader?
If you have 1 or 2 you can identify with yourself find out more about their lives and what skills they have and use to be a great leader.
But don't copy what they are doing instead ask yourself why people like you or to be with you? And what is it what you enjoy when leading other people? Also reflect on yourself how you deal with day-to-day activities how you deal with conflict, acknowledgment and consideration of others and also what is meaningful to you and what meaning you give to others.
A great read is Simon Sineks "Leaders eat last". Keep being curios!

Karen’s Answer

Crystal - this is a great question!!!! There are multiple ways to develop leadership skills many of which are in every day life. Think about how you engage with your peers & how you influence them when you are making decisions & how they respond to your recommendation. Think about when they come to you for advice on something they are working on.

I would also suggest thinking about leaders you have worked for or even another leader that you worked on a project with that you really liked their leadership style or motivated you. What did they do that you liked, what actions did they take that motivated you? Then think about yourself & how you may already do some of those things or incorporate them into your routine in your own style.

I would also say the same for leaders that didn't make you feel motivated or you didn't like their style. Why didn't you like their approach - this will help you understand what you also don't want to do as a leader.

I would also suggest understanding your strengths & opportunities; this will allow you to leverage your strengths & be aware of your opportunities. You can take an assessment through Gallup called Strength Finders that will help you identify your strengths.
Thank you comment icon Hi Karen, I appreciate your ideas about why one leadership style may be motivating while another may not. Thank you, Crystal Crystal

Patrick’s Answer

Leadership skills vary. I have been considered a "leader" for a majority of my life in a few different areas. What I have found is that the best way to lead, is to make the people you are leading want to succeed for themselves and for you. If you can build rapport with your team, and they want to succeed for themselves AND you, they will work that much harder to reach that point of success. Don't bring the same attitude and approach to every member of the team. People are different and respond to different things. Adjust your tone and the team member's responsibilities based on their situation, but there should be an overarching tone that speaks to the majority. This should be practiced by leaders for the exact reason you mention in your question: educational learning. People come from different backgrounds, so TEACHING them as you lead them so they can do it right will make a huge difference in their productivity as well. The same goes for you if you are the one being taught: ask questions, and ask people to explain things to you so that you can understand in a continuous way and see the purpose in your work.

Justin’s Answer

It's important to figure out what type of leader you want to be. Find other like minded individuals or leaders that you look up to, either through your network or perhaps even social media. Study those individuals and their leadership skills. If it's someone you have a relationship with ask them to be your mentor/coach. Ask them if it's okay to connect a few times per year so you can ask for advice and bounce ideas off of them.

I have had many mentors and have gained the most from those that I asked to be my coach. Most people love to help others and they will have a vested interest in helping you succeed. You just need to ask.....

Ryan’s Answer

Learning leadership skills is something that does not come easy.
The biggest thing that I did was really learn from my current leaders and be proactive to speak with them. You can learn A LOT from a 30 min conversation with a leader.
Read books about leadership as there are so many ways you can be an effective leader, some that you may not even see or know.
One thing that I learned was understanding that people are different and to be a good leader, you must get to know your people, understand how to manage that person.

Leo’s Answer

For me the best way to learn leadership skills was to ask my manager for opportunities to do just that. Some examples include leading trainings for newer joiners, leading meetings and stepping up when leadership need assistance.

To promote educational learning you can empower colleagues to teach each other. Take note of success stories that came from the teaching and promote it so others can implement. Lead by example, promote the educational learning environment by implementing it yourself and spread to the people around you to create a positive environment.

Frank’s Answer

One great way to learn leadership skills is by being a leader and getting feedback. Find relevant student organizations or local professional organizations, like the Financial Management Association, get involved, and become a leader in those organizations. Organizations at the college level and at the local professional level are always looking for good leaders. Most also have a variety of volunteer positions, so you can start small and work your way up to more responsibility. These organizations also promote educational learning, from which you would also benefit.
