Should I be worried if i dont know what to do in life even though I'm in high school.

I'm only asking this question because I wish to know if I'm falling behind or if I'm simply not being smart about it. #higher-education

Camille’s Answer

Definitely not! Some people take longer than others to figure things out. I didn't know what I wanted to do until I was almost done with college, in my early 20's.

That doesn't mean that you can't try and figure out what you want to do now. You can take a career aptitude test https://www.whatcareerisrightforme.com/

You can also try volunteering or getting an internship in a career that you think is interesting to see if it's something that you want to do.

No, you should not be worried. Some people don't even know what they want to do after high school and I mean I think the only reason I had an idea is because my mom kind of implanted having a college education. She stressed it was very important while I was growing up. You may not know until you are 21 or maybe 25 years. Right now, is a time to enjoy being in high school do as much research on what you are interested in. Try doing some volunteering to help you determine if that would be something you want to do as far as a chosen field. Play sports or join clubs at school and also research on different scholarships if you choose to go to college. But enjoy your life and being a teenager because once you become an adult it's pretty much your choice of what you want to do in life after you leave high school. Some people are just late bloomers when it comes planning out what they want to be when they grow up and everyone learns differently. Best of luck.

Kim’s Answer

A few months ago I met a man who went straight from high school, to college - got his Bachelor's degree in teaching, then went straight for his Master's. Got that too. Started teaching in the Fall of 2016. In October he came to me, needing help because he wanted to change his career. Sadly, this is a true story.

Moral of the story: Don't be like that. It's not easy to know what you want to do if you have never done it! The media glorifies everything, but many jobs have a bad side that no one ever tells you about. For example: Social work. You think you are going to get to help people, but many of the positions instead have you spending oodles of time doing paperwork and trying to meet numbers.

Take your time! Get a well-rounded education, so hopefully you will be somewhat prepared no matter which direction you decide to go!

Jacquelyn’s Answer

It is absolutely not an issue, and many young people are unsure of what they would like to do as a career!

My best advice would be to get to know yourself. You do not need to jump straight into college after graduating high school. A gap year is always a fantastic option which can help to grow your skills, network, gain new friends and learn where your interests lie. Travel, volunteer, take an internship and find out what drives you.

Best of luck!

James’s Answer

No definitely not, in fact it is rare to find people who are 100 percent sure of what they want to do with their future careers. Students who go to college choose a major and if they find that they do not like it they change it to something that they might be interested in.

The thing is that you will discover your passions, you will discover your interests, the most important thing is that you know yourself the best, no one should decide for you what need to be because that is up to you in the end.

I've had friends who changed their major in the middle of their college years, they changed their majors because they found that the career field that they were pursuing is not for them, so they switched, so this also means that it is okay to tread the waters a little bit and try out something you might have an interest in and if you find it that it is not for you then switch.

Adam’s Answer

I absolutely wouldn't worry about this right now as long as you are still actively participating in life. Find things you enjoy doing, and you will be exposed to new people and opportunities, which may help you formulate a plan.

Life is fluid, and what I wanted to do at 28 is different than what I want to do at 38. Just always stay active, keep moving, and don't be afraid to work for things that you want.
