Thank you comment icon Lily, If you have a passion for helping others that is a great start. Have you tried looking up someone in your area who works in this field and asking them to answer a few questions for you? They could provided you with some valuable insights about the pros and cons of a career in Psychology. They could also provided you with insights on how they deal with the challenges. Sarah’s Answer

Hello, Lily!
I am still trying to find a way to make my dream of working in this field possible. Here are some of the things that I am passionate about and are keys to knowing that this path is right for you.
a.) I care about others ability to identify and explore areas for self growth.
b.) I am genuinely interested in listening to others tell their stories.
c.) You are looking into the field for reasons other than how much money you can earn.

Sarah recommends the following next steps:

Work with a career counselor or take some free tests to narrow down your career paths

Priya’s Answer

Hi Lily,
I am in the Counseling field, so similar in that it is a helping field. I also did Psychology for my undergrad degree. I think, for me, I knew it was for me because the classes made me excited and were fun. Personally, I think if what you do makes you excited, it can be a good place for you =). There are other considerations later you can take regarding if the job/career is the right fit for your needs, but I think starting with if you like it is a great place to start =). Good luck!

Daniel’s Answer

Hi Lily,

I agree with Priya but would also like to add that a great skill to have if you want to go into the field of psychology is being able to converse with others, especially on the listening side. If you are interested in the counseling or clinical route, this is especially important. If you don't have this skill yet or are not sure, that's okay! College will give you plenty of opportunities to practice this skill if you are proactive in looking for them. I switched from the field of psychology after majoring in undergrad to become a teacher because I realized that I loved working with younger people as a mentor and watching them grow intellectually rather than counseling others on their mental difficulties, but it took me a while to figure that out and it's okay if it does for you too!

Aastha’s Answer

Hey! I agree with the other answers here as well.

If you find the classes exciting and you find yourself wanting to learn more about the subject, it’s definitely right for you! Going into college is about finding what you love and building who you are, have fun with your major and if you like it!
