What are some things to do during college?

I'm going to go to a local college and I wanted to hear from first hand experience what to do to enhance my college experience. It's a relatively small college and there are a few programs there but I also want to know what relevant "college enhancing" things to do. Still very unsure about college life and want some insight into what to do to make my college experience more memorable.

Besides the obvious of learning and obtaining good grades, I think it is also important to properly network and discover new things. Learn how to be independently motivated to pursue your coursework, meet new people, and try a new activity.

Hi Kaitlyn,

I would say two things: join a club of any kind and use tutoring or support services offered at the school. You are paying for the support services already so you need to make sure that you are using them. (Have someone help you with your resume, for example.) You can also make a choice to create a club or other to tutor someone else. There are also events that usually come up, like plays or book readings or art exhibits. Go to support your fellow students and connect with people who you would not meet otherwise.

Hey Kaitlyn! Great question! Any programs you can get involved in at your College will not only give you great experience and a "resume boost" but will also help you network and meet new people. Do some research on the College you are attending or even talk to the Counselor to see what options they have available. This can help you identify which ones you may be interested in. Another great idea is to look up the College or any alumni on Social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc). This will provide you with some first hand information from people who attended and may have participated in some of the programs. Good luck!!!

Hey Kaitlyn!
Lots of good advice so far. Try to find social club with alumni participation that helps with networking. This could lead to internships so you can experience what life is like when you complete school. One of the biggest challenge for people attending college is knowing what is right for you. If the college you are going to is for associates degree use your electives for alternative degrees that you may be interested in. I finished my AA leaning to business with a lot of psychology which was my second thought of a career. Both helped me with my career all the way to today. Always remember to enjoy the journey of life and never dwell on decisions that you need to change later in life. Life is all about change.

Hi Kaitlyn,

I would highly recommend joining all of the programs you are interested in! I also went to a local school and I regret not being more involved on campus and participating in everything the school had to offer.

Join clubs, start groups, find a list of all the activities your school has for the year. A lot of times there are different productions and events on campus that not everyone hears about so finding a list of activities and programs is a great way to get more involved.

Also going to games or creating study groups is a great way to meet others and form friendships!

Hello Kaitlyn!

I think one of the best things you can do to enhance your college experience is get involved! There are so many opportunities on campus to get involved either in sports (competitive and club), organizations, professional affiliations, and even department specific roles such as admissions tour guides, student scribes/note takers, office assistants and in campus dining. The more you can get involved, the more overall experience you will take in, even if you do not think it is directly related to your major but is just something you enjoy and are passionate about! Also, the more involved you are, the more opportunity you will have to network with peers and faculty, which will help expand your network early on!
