What steps can I take to help me pursue my career in architectural design or construction?

I am a high school graduate that’s looking into trade schools that can help me to get more hands on experience. I went to school for architecture and I want to get more experience in skill trade.

Hey Jada,

I went to Pennsylvania College of Technology and they have a great program. Several of my roommates at college were architectural majors.

Hi Jada!

This is a great question, and one that comes up often. I have helped to hire people that have been in a very similar position to where you are at right now. There is a few routes that you could take!

One of which I can outline below:
-Enter into the manual labor/skilled labor industry while obtaining classroom certifications with architectural design tools.
-Once obtaining the technology portion with architectural design tools such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc. start applying!
-Apply to engineering companies who support work for utility providers (gas, electric, water, communications).

These companies are always looking for people to help them create systems and diagrams for those out in the field. For example, they could task you with creating an outline for new telephone poles and where they should be placed along a roadside and the correlating communications equipment needed, and at what point.

I know this may not be what you think of when thinking of architectural design, but this is where a lot of people begin!

This experience can be translated after some time and arbitraged into obtaining a position with a dedicated architectural design company.

Then there you are!

I hope this helps.

Best of luck,

Ian
