Entrepreneur or Medical?

I feel like I need a high paying job to support my family, but I don't know if I want to take the risk of starting a business or if I want to go through the years of schooling for anything in the health field only to dislike going to work. I am very worried about what path I should take in my adulthood. My mother is a nurse but she described the many risks and inconveniences and risks of nursing, and I'm not very confident in anything business. I'm pretty split on what to do.

Step one...take a breath. It's going to work out...especially if you have a support system.

I'm going to let you in on a secret that often goes unspoken...you did not specify your age, or if "family" meant your parents/siblings or a child you have. But it is the same...many people go to school to "learn something" but end up working in an entirely different field. Health care is a very specific thing. If it's not in you...don't pursue it just for money.

You didn't specify what type of business you were thinking of starting...fair enough. I personally don't think you should pursue a "career" in a field that you think might make you miserable at the end of the day. I spent ten years in retail prior to ending up where I am...paid really well...but when mid-management got laid off I had nothing to show or bounce back on.

If you are able to go to college and get a degree it will help. Once you dip into the medical field I have to bow out because I majored in accounting.

I don't know details of your personal scenario but I would advise against going in to any field just for salary reasons. My job in financial aid frustrates me on a daily basis...but I still love my job. I love doing "triage".

Please check in with your "family"...I appreciate the fact that you want to support them...it is admirable...just that - their opinions might point you in another direction...

You got this!

Annette’s Answer

Getting a well rounded education is a wise investment. While studying you will hopefully discover fields of work or study that interest you and become a better candidate for jobs in those fields. Every job comes with its own pro's and con's, the key is finding the type of work that you enjoy while being able to support yourself and your family. Take it one step at a time; it may be possible to work and save money while you study. Think about your strengths and preferences in terms of interacting directly with people vs. working independently, how much time you are willing or able to commit to work and study vs. spending time with your family.

Ethan’s Answer

Do both. Go to school and while your there learn the process of being an entrepreneur, the best customer basis are the people around you and schools have a lot of people.
