Christine’s Answer

Hi Frankie,
There are always ways to better your education and new information for professional development. The main place to start is where do you want to improve and further your education and profession in Psychiatry? Have you completed your BS in Psychiatry, are you going for your Master's, are you planning on going for your PhD or Medical Degree?

If you would let me know where you are now in your educational career and where you want to go with it, I can help you with future decisions.

Without more specific information, it is difficult to give exact advice.

Best of luck to you Frankie. Take care.
Christine

Christine recommends the following next steps:

Determine where you want to add on to your Education
What are you aspirations for your degree; Medical School or PhD
Research Psychiatry and find what interests you the most
Speak with your college advisor and see what they may suggest

n’s Answer

Dear Frankie,

Are you asking whether studying Psychiatry may provide opportunities for professional development in the field of teaching? The short answer is, yes there are opportunities in Psychiatry education. The long answer is: it depends. I am hoping that you have either taken courses in psychology and/or have an undergraduate degree majoring in psychology. While both disciplines provide mental health support to their clients, the scope of each of these is quite different.
Psychology investigates behaviours of individuals as a function of cognitive and social influences. Psychologists use various forms of therapies such as group therapy, psychoanalysis, talk therapy and so on. Their education path comprises of an undergraduate degree with either a major or minor in psychology, a Master's degree in psychology in the subdiscipline of their choice, and a Ph.D. or a PsyD, in psychology on a topic of their choice. In addition the Ph.D. and Psy.D. candidates need to complete a couple of hundred hours of supervised practical training with a practicing psychologist before they themselves can practice.
Psychiatrists on the other hand need to get an undergraduate in Biology/Chemistry/Pscychology with a minor in Biology; an MD, and then residency. The coursework in pharmacology, anatomy, biology, neurology, including mental health among other courses in the medical school affords them the in depth understanding of the biological basis of mental health. It takes anywhere between 8-12 years to get the license as a Psychiatrist. They may practice various therapies, but also can prescribe drugs.

Both Psychologists and Psychiatrists can teach in large universities both public and private, in medical schools, and in nursing schools.

n recommends the following next steps:

Determine which pathway appeals to you more.
Add required credits to your undergraduate coursework
Determine what materials you will need to apply to either graduate school (for graduate school you will take GRE) or to medical school (for Medical school you will take MCAT)
Apply to either graduate school or Medical school.
You can also opt to follow a program which grants MD. Ph.D.
