What are some good architectural programs for seniors in high school?

What are some good, affordable architectural programs?

I've been researching good areas and schools where the programs are affordable for high school students, and some schools are far and expensive. If there are any good recommendations, preferably online, that would be amazing!

Hi Natalie! Architecture is such a wonderful field to explore. If you are looking for affordability why not just try to offer your services to a local architecture firm as a part-time job. Sometimes firms are looking for young energetic people to help run errand, model build, or just allow you to shadow someone. I would try and put some kind of portfolio together if you are interested in art or any other creative outlets you enjoy. This will at least show a firm that you are putting in the effort. I see you are not too far from Boston so maybe on winter break firms are looking for someone to help out or maybe there is a friendly local firm that would like to at least give you a tour of there office. You never know! Like Bill I started out in Boston and my first job was actually working in a firm on Newbury Street down the street from the BAC! Asking for a tour of a firm might be a great intro for you to get your foot in the door and keep up a relationship with whomever you meet. Good Luck!

Bill’s Answer

Hi Natalie,
Nice to hear from you. Most colleges that provide a professional architectural degree, BArch is five years long. There are programs that don't follow the traditional path of college degree and then off to the working world.

I might be a bit bias but I graduated from a non-traditional program. The Boston Architectural College on Newbury Street is based on learning in the classroom and at the same time learning from the work place. Getting a degree takes a little bit longer but it is well worth it.

Becoming an Architect is not only getting a professional degree but an apprentice period of approximately three years is required and a written exam is required. A school like BAC you can work towards your apprenticeship while going to school which shortens the time before you can sit for the exam.

BAC has open houses throughout the year and a summer program for high school students introducing them to the world of architecture.

Good luck,
Bill Lorigan
