An elevator mechanic is a great profession. There are large as well as small companies who hire these professionals. In most cases these are positions where you need to register with the union, especially in Chicago. They have numerous training classes but usually you need to get into the profession from a referral. Hopefully you know people who are in the profession who could lead you to the right contacts to get registered and training. Elevator mechanics make a very good hourly rate.

I'm not in the trade, I work on the engineering side of elevators. Elevator Mechanics are well paid. Generally speaking, to obtain your journeyman's card, you will need up to five years of apprenticeship as a helper while taking classes organized by the IUEC (International Union of Elevator Constructors). It can be hazardous, so if you are not a careful and detail oriented person, I would suggest doing something else. Currently, there is a shortage of good Mechanics, so I say go for it.
