In what field can I give back the most?
I know that medicine is needed to heal people and that technology creates various things to help people as well as how engineers are needed to build our homes and structures that we use everyday. Though what I want to know is what field should I go into that could potentially help the most people.

This is a great question and one in which you probably need to do a some research for your own benefit. What I mean by that is you need to ask yourself a most important question and that is " What would I like to work at and what skills would I like to utilized, that would make me happy, and also help the most people, which seems to be your goal. You must like what you do in order to help others . I will suggest a few ways to find that career choice and then you will be able to use those skills with others. Here are a few suggestions:
1. All colleges have career centers and they offer counseling for students with assessments that help you define what it is you want to do. You need to know this first in order to define what field you should go into and in order to help and give back to others. So if you haven't taken any of these assessments and talked with a Career Counselor it would be the very first thing that I would suggest you do.
2.Once you have an idea about the various field of study you can possibly pursue classes towards a degree or certificate in that field. You will be much happier doing something that you like, and then seeing the result to help others. You said you wanted to help the MOST people, and that is a wonderful goal, but don't let that word MOST get in your way of finding the most beneficial career for you. Any amount of people is productive, so begin with the thoughts about yourself " How happy and productive will I be in this particular job." It is necessary to ask yourself these questions to allow you to have a fulfilling career, Please work on this 1&2 suggestion before you pursue your goal.
3. You can also volunteer or maybe even get an internship thru a business or the school. You can also shadow someone at work if they are willing to let, you and that means following a person that you admire, and think this is the type of job I want and the type of person I want to be.
These steps are very important to help you find the best fit for your career choice and then move on to do the job that you think will give the you the feeling of helping the most people. You have to get the knowledge and experience toward you Career Choice in order to move on to your Goal of Helping the Most People!

Hi ,
In any filed you can give your best. If you are interested in a certain job and if you feel that you can make a living out of it , then its a always going to make you happy, and as a result you are going to give back the maximum.
People working in healthcare helps us all for sure , but not everyone wish to do a job in that sector . The same goes for any sector . It has to be a mix of your personal taste , making a living out of it and also ensuring that you give something back to the people you love.

Totally agree with Jerin! Also, don't forget you can always volunteer in order to help others, you don't have to limit where you can help just because it isn't your actual job. Another avenue to consider is working in local government (especially once you have some good work experience) because you can change or create laws to benefit entire cities, states or even the entire country or world! Good job for thinking of others, keep it up!

Giving back is all about how a professional is able to creatively use their talents for the good of the community. As you alluded to, the medical field is a no brainer because of the obstacles presented by the cost of healthcare. Technology has now become the backbone of infrastructure. Look at areas like Puerto Rico that was recently devastated by a hurricane. This area was already facing a financial crisis now they are forced to rebuild communications systems, get their power grid running, repair/redesign transportation infrastructure. Whatever you decide to do, there is a way to give back in a meaningful way. In many cases, you have to seek out that opportunity. It's great to have that mindset of giving back using your professional gifts.
