What steps should I be taking now while I’m in high school to get ready to apply to college and go for an interior design degree?

I’m also not sure if I want to study close to home or far away, what should I be doing in the case that I do decide to study abroad? Will it be more difficult getting into a college in another country?

Ana Carina’s Answer

Hi Amy, It has always been a complicated decision to know what we want to dedicate our lives to.
This could be your checkbox to make a decision.

1- To do thorough research on the interior design career
2- Review what skills and knowledge companies are asking for on Linkedin for vacancies.
3- Investigate how much money they earn, how much time you have to invest in a working day, if it is a demanding career in which you have to work on weekends, evaluate all the scenarios.
4- Approach people that you know and ask about their experiences in the interior design environment.
5- Now research the universities that have a degree in interior design,.
6- Check all the subjects of the career in different universities and costs.
7- Based on the above points, you will be able to decide if your best university option is inside or outside of New York.

Good luck.

jasmine’s Answer

If you're interested in pursuing an interior design degree, there are several steps you can take while still in high school to prepare for college:

jasmine recommends the following next steps:

Take relevant courses - Take courses in art, design, and architecture to develop your skills and knowledge in these areas. You can also consider taking courses in computer-aided design (CAD) software to become familiar with the tools used in the industry.
Build a portfolio - Start developing a portfolio of your work, including sketches, drawings, and design projects. This will demonstrate your creativity and skills to college admissions officers.
Participate in extracurricular activities - Join art or design clubs, volunteer for community design projects, or participate in design competitions. These activities will show your passion and commitment to the field.
Research colleges - Look for colleges that offer interior design programs and research their admission requirements, coursework, and faculty.
Prepare for standardized tests - Some colleges require standardized test scores, such as the SAT or ACT, as part of the admissions process. Consider taking these tests and preparing for them in advance.

Fernando’s Answer

When it comes to preparing for the field you have to research career opportunities along with the quality of the curriculum that the college offers. As for studying abroad it can be difficult due to requiring a study visa along with meeting the college requirements. For studying abroad research what scholarships are on offer along with the price of the college. Do not jump the gun on this, studying abroad can be a very rewarding experience that leads you to discovering new things, but you should not indebt yourself for it. Do price comparisons, research cost of study and cost of living before making a decision.

Erica’s Answer

Hi, Amy,

I like the suggestions Ms. Pena shared. Her point about researching universities will help you answer your questions about studying abroad. For example, Humber College (in Toronto) has a link on their front page for potential international students.

As you research your desired career and colleges, consider summarizing your findings in a spreadsheet or word processing document.

It may seem overwhelming right now, but everything will come together. Enjoy the journey!

Kindly,
Erica
