What are some good tips for writing a fantasy story?

I’m writing a fantasy book and I’m unsure how to do it since I’ve only written realistic fiction and nonfiction before.

Hi Annika,

I'm so excited for you that you want to write a fantasy book. Read other fantasy books, and other genres too. Try to write every day. I write to a timer that I set for 31 minutes. Begin this writing practice with the start line, "The story I'm writing is about . . ."

Some people create a roadmap and outlines. I tend to write pages and pages to find my story. And after many pages, I find my structure. And after I write my first draft, I rewrite the beginning.

Here is an excellent book to give you some writing exercises to consider:
The Weekend Novelist by Robert Ray

Create or find a group of writers that you can meet with, that you trust, and share pages with them. Finding support for your writing habit will keep you engaged in the act of writing and making art.

Wishing you the best in all your creative endeavors.

Hey Annika! 😊 I'm super excited for your Fantasy Book journey, and I hope these friendly tips help make your writing process a magical one:

1. Get inspired - Dive into your favorite fantasy books and see how the authors tackle world-building, character development, and plot twists. Feel free to reread and learn from them! 📚

2. Know your audience - Identify who you're writing for, so you can make creative decisions and plan a sales strategy that suits your market. 🎯

3. Begin with mini-adventures - Start by writing short stories about your main character or other characters, even if you don't plan to publish them—it's a fun way to explore your fantasy world! 🌈

4. Let your imagination soar - Envision and create a vibrant world, complete with geography, customs, culture, and history. The sky's the limit! 🎨

5. Choose a storytelling perspective - Will it be a first-person or third-person narrative? 🤔

6. Get to know your characters - Spend some time understanding their personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. 👥

7. Map out your epic tale - Create an outline to guide you through your story's chapters and plot twists. 🗺️

8. Set the rules - Establish the laws of your universe, whether they're related to politics, economics, or even magic. Make your world feel real and consistent! 🧙‍♂️

9. Craft natural dialogues - Use conversations and actions to showcase your characters' personalities and advance the plot. 🗣️

10. Don't forget to enjoy the journey - Take your time and cherish every step of creating your fantasy masterpiece. 🏰

Best of luck with your magical writing adventure, Annika! Can't wait to see where your imagination takes you! 🌟

Remember the rules...there are none. Seriously, think about what you've seen on TV, in movies, and perhaps even read. If you haven't done any of that then immerse yourself in it and learn that fantasy stories can go where you want and do what you want. This type of fiction is a way to let your inner child roam and pick out anything that strikes your fancy. Like always, I'll say what I say to everyone, just write. You'd be amazed what you can come up with just by laying down a few words.
Just write.
