Here are some free video editing programs you can use:

DaVinci Resolve: A powerful software for editing and color grading videos, with a free version that has many features.
HitFilm Express: Free software for video editing and visual effects, offering tools for creating professional-looking videos.

These free options are a good starting point for video editing, though they may not have as many features as professional software like Adobe Premiere Pro.

Adobe Premiere can handle everything. You can learn and use After Effects and Audition for Special Effects and Audio polishing if you are also taking care of the finalizing of your projects. However, most editing needs can be confined to Adobe Premiere.
Adobe doesn't have a color correction tool separated from Premiere, so some people make the mistake of editing on Adobe and then taking the project to DaVinci for coloring. Please, stay away from that mistake. Use the color correction tools of Adobe and you'll be happy. The workflow between Adobe and DaVinci is not working as it should and you might fall into a nightmarish trap trying to have these two pieces of software talk to each other. I edited my movie "Night Hunt" on Adobe and then sent it to a colorist to do color grading on DaVinci. It was a waste of time and money. Learn how to color correct on Adobe and you'll have everything you need in one suite.

Adobe Premier stands out as the top choice, but don't forget about other impressive Adobe offerings, like Rush, for example. Give them a try and see the difference!

Definitely Adobe Premiere Pro is the video editing software you're looking for. That's the one where you do all the cutting, splicing, trimming--the editing.

After Effects is kind of like photoshop for video and I use it as a supplement to Premiere Pro. For instance, in Premiere Pro, I can do some fairly fancy text graphics and video manipulation (like cropping, blurring of faces, layering of videos, etc). But After Effects can do that as well, but with A LOT more power, customization and freedom. Plus in After effects you can do some 3D camera work and many other video things that Premiere Pro doesn't handle. Suppose you're editing a video and you're using a photo at the beach. In After Effects, you can make the water appear to be moving despite it being a still photo.
Or if you have an audio recording and want to show the waveform on screen--AE handles that; not Premiere Pro.

Illustrator is more for graphic design and drawing and if you want to make your own font, you definitely use Illustrator for that.
Photoshop does photo manipulation and if you work with photos a lot, would be a great addition if you needed to spruce some photos up
Lightroom does the same thing to photos and can really make some bland pictures really pop and is pretty easy to use IMO

Adobe Lightroom excels at video editing.
Thank you comment icon This is false, Lightroom is used primarily for photo editing and not video editing. I think you meant to type Adobe Premiere as it is the dedicated video editing software for Adobe Creative Cloud. Kathy Chan
