What to do as an aspiring engineer with no experience or knowledge????
Hello. I am a 17-year-old in Laredo, and I hope to major in a branch of engineering in the future. Despite not having experience, would it be best to seek out internships to gain experience? If so, what are my options in Laredo or online? I've tried looking but I'm struggling with it as most jobs are looking for college undergraduates/graduates.
My dad is a mechanic, so would it be a good start to work with him? If so, how should I prepare? My dad is a busy man and is less interested in taking the time to show me the ropes. What online resources would be a good start to understanding what it's like to work as a mechanic/auto diagnostics so that I can be less of a hindrance and more of a valuable asset?

Hi! I think online resources like LinkedIn or even twitter would help. Also, shadowing would be super helpful in my opinion. You can learn a lot by just standing there and paying attention.

It's awesome that you're interested in Engineering! Have you thought about a specific area yet? I began with chemical engineering but later switched to industrial and systems engineering because I liked tackling bigger issues. Internships and shadowing are excellent ways to explore. You can also find free online courses, like the ones offered by Stanford (https://online.stanford.edu/free-courses). I found some internships in Laredo on Indeed, which you should check out. Medline, Dell, and Transplace currently have summer internships available.
To learn more about cars before shadowing your dad, watch YouTube videos. There are tons of helpful videos that explain how to diagnose and fix various car brands. If you can't get an internship this summer, consider a summer job at a local auto shop. Many places hire during the summer, including retailers like AutoZone.

Hi!! I'm thinking about going into mechatronics engineering or chemistry and I hope to research alternative energy!! Systems engineering is also beginning to pique my interest! Systems engineering is so much fun due to the practicality of it. Oh wow!! I'll definitely be on the lookout for industry events near me then!! I honestly hadn't considered that and I think it's a really cool idea because I wanted to do a research project thing but the more I think about it the more intimidating it becomes because of microwaves and hydrogen storage (and I don't know anything)!! Maybe I could find out about something more reasonable for me to do or maybe even something to do with my current idea, since I want to research something significant despite my current knowledge state.
