Kimberly has already made excellent points in her post, but there is also one thing I would like to add based on my colleagues from high school who were accepted to a top university or even an Ivy league school:
Most of these schools will require you to write an essay and even possibly make you conduct an interview with a recruiter from that particular school. The topic changes every year for the essay and no interview is the same. Make sure you are your authentic self but also try to go out-of-the-box when answering these questions. It doesn't need to be a sob story, but a unique part of your life that will get the admissions office to see you as a person rather than just any other applicant to the school. You can also reach out to other students who were admitted to these schools and ask them about their experience when applying for these prestigious universities. Good luck!

Kimberly and Sara both provided excellent guidance. I will add two points:

1. It is good to demonstrate a commitment to learning, both by taking progressively more challenging coursework (and doing well) and taking a deeper dive into areas of interest through additional coursework, research or internships.
2. If a college/university offers interviews, take advantage of the opportunity to learn a bit more about the institution, tell more about yourself and show your personality. Practice in advance with people who will give you supportive, but honest feedback.
