Molly’s Answer

Justin,

This is a great question! Simply answered, I would recommend to step your foot into multiple areas. If you find that what you are currently in or studying does not satisfy and appeal to what you want to do in the future, then you can easily shift away from that one area and focus in another. In college, I knew that I wanted to focus my studies in general business. However, that is all I knew. After focusing my studies in multiple areas of business, I found my way into Human Resources where I currently am working in today. I received my MBA focusing specifically in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources, and currently have a position as an Human Resources Administrator for a Sam's Club distribution and fulfillment center. You will never know what you like until you dip your foot in the water and tread through several areas!

I hope this helped!

Atul’s Answer

If you're feeling a bit lost about what to study, a good first step is to figure out what you definitely don't want to study. This can help you narrow down your options and make the decision a bit easier. Let me give you an example: a few years back, my son was in the same boat. Despite having fantastic grades and a great SAT score, he knew he didn't want to be an engineer or a doctor. He also knew that spending his days crunching numbers wasn't for him. With these insights, he was able to focus his choices and ended up graduating with honors in finance, a field he's been very successful in.

Next, think about which subjects you really enjoy at high school. These could provide some clues about what you might like to study further. And don't worry too much about getting it wrong - most big universities have a common curriculum for the first two years, so you can always switch if you need to.

But remember, it's always best to have an idea of what you want to study before you start. This can help avoid extending your studies beyond four years, which could be a financial burden on your parents if they're the ones footing the bill for your tuition.

The previous responses were indeed insightful. To build on them, I recommend considering local junior or community colleges if you have the chance. Enroll in a course or two if possible. This is an excellent method to delve into various subjects and understand the structure of college courses.

Moreover, if you're unsure about college during your final high school year, think about joining a liberal arts program at a community college. These programs often require students to cover a wide range of subjects, providing exposure to numerous options. Once you've found a subject that truly ignites your passion, you can change your major. Remember, the credits you earn at community college can be transferred to other institutions.
