Hi Uzair, it's a great time to go into digital marketing and it's wonderful that you already know that is the area you want to pursue prior to college. The great thing about digital marketing is that you can hit the ground running fairly quickly and build a well paying career because demand for digital marketers is only going to increase as the world becomes more digital.

You're on the right track. In terms of steps, I'd suggest...

1) Taking some courses in digital marketing and then start to apply for internships. You can find online courses on LinkedIn, Coursera, Udemy etc .
2) To get even more practice, you can either volunteer with a local organization or offer your skills on a platform like UpWork where you can support people with their projects.
3) Once in college, continue to take courses in that field and take internship opportunities any chance you get.

By the time you're out, you may already be pro! Good luck!

Hi Uzair - I agree with the answers provided. There are many different directions within digital marketing. You can focus on SEO or UX, publishing, etc. A foundational understanding of HTML is good and Hubspot has some good training/certifications as well. I also recommend LinkedIn Learning. Try reading some job descriptions for internships or entry-level roles to see what skills are being sought to know where to focus. Usually editorial and technical skills are both welcome in digital marketing. Best of luck!

Hello Uzair! Consider enrolling in a local institution that provides short courses in digital marketing. You can earn a certificate through these programs. Usually, these institutions also help you connect with a company where you can kick-start your career.

Preston’s Answer

Hey Uzsair! As a search engine optimization specialist, I started by reading Google's free SEO for beginners whitepaper. Most resources like these are found from various providers of tools and will start from square one. If you don't find the first step interesting then I would move on to a different area of digital marketing. I would then suggest narrowing in on the area of digital marketing you are most interested in and earning certificates for the tools most popular in the industry.
