I want to know what I can do to get into Cornell university veterinarian school and find a good high school. What I should volunteer for? What type of high school I should go to and how to get a scholarship to go there (we're low on money)? I want to start figuring this all out now so I have time to prepare

I want help on giving me some options for what I should do and what could help my situation so I can figure out what to do in the future so I can be prepared

Miss Wilma’s Answer

In being accepted into a great university for a specialty profession such as veterinary medicine one first must take 1 step at a time. If you are less economically advantaged and feel pressured to attend a private high school in order to meet your ultimate career goal then you are perhaps thinking too far ahead.

First of all one must accept the reality of their life situation and if you can , then take advantage of opportunities available to you such as private high schools that offer tuition assistance and scholarships.

Then your next step is in attending high school. You want to earn the highest grades possible. You also want to work with a school counselor to ensure that you are taking the right college prep courses to be accepted into a 4 year college for your 1st college degree.

Then as far as volunteer work is concerned that is also something you can take advantage of. You can do searches online by using key words to find volunteer sites and organizations near you.

our focus in high school is to take courses that stimulate your mind, fulfil the college entrance requirements and also allow you to do some independent research while still in high school that relates to your future career interests. You also want to make sure that the school counselor is allowing you to register for the math and sciences classes that you need to have to be accepted into college.

Once accepted into a 4 year college study program either in biology, pre vet medicine, or a very closely related sciences program. This will allow you to take the classes which are also pre requisite courses for the graduate professional program in veterinary medicine. Then once you are registered for your 4 year college classes you want to earn very good grades.

Getting into grad school into very competitive programs of study such as vet medicine will not be very easy. There are all kinds of geniuses attending 4 year colleges as well as yourself. These days students are even taking courses at home online and receiving higher grades than they would perhaps if they had been attending in person. Taking a few online classes every summer is also a good way to prepare yourself for the university classes that you will need to take eventually.

Being accepted into your program of professional studies is harder than the work that you will do once accepted into your program of studies. This is usually because once in grad school many of your classes are practical versus from the book. You will be tested in real life settings and have to apply your knowledge realistically. You will need to be able to clearly communicate and be able to defend your answers in grad school.

By the time you are doing this you will see how much easier it actually is than in just reading and taking #2 pencil and paper exams, or essay blue book tests.

You will be doing so much more practical work and this is the ultimate reward in attending the graduate school of your choice. Then you will still need to attend classes and receive highest marks and be prepared ultimately to apply your knowledge and practical skills as an intern and ultimately during a state licensing exam to become a professional veterinarian.

Miss Wilma recommends the following next steps:

Begin online research of your desired 4 year college
Research which 4 year universities offer the best pre veterinary med programs for undergrad majors.
Then also research the majors accepted when applying to Cornell, and other Graduate Schools of Veterinary Medicine
Tour various 4 year colleges of your choice before applying to them , if you can.
Tour the various graduate schools of veterinary medicine during your attendance for your pre-veterinary medicine at what ever 4 year college you are accepted at.
