What Do You Need To Design A Video Game?
I need to find out what materials I need to be a video game designer. My tech teacher at school wants us to think about what we could do right now to earn money. This is important to me because I think I have the materials but I'm not sure about it.

Hey Leah,
There are two answers to your question, depending on what you mean by "design a video game."
If, by "design," you mean "describe it completely without making it," then all you need is Google docs or a similar "office suite" of programs: word processor, spreadsheet, and vector graphics package for making flowcharts.
If, by "design," you mean "build it," you need a different set of tools. Sean's answer of "Unity" is good, especially if you know how to code (the Godot and Cocos-2d engines are also worth checking out). If you don't know how to code, you should check out Game Maker, Fusion, and Construct 2. You will also need some art programs. Gimp and Inkscape are good, free programs for making 2D pixel and vector art, respectively. Blender is a good program for making 3D art. You can find courses on Udemy for $10 that will teach you the basics of all of these packages.
Making games is a lot of work, but it's great fun. Good luck with your project! Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you get stuck along the way.

There are several software packages you can get right now to start making games. I suggest you get Unity for free and take some free or cheap courses online (Udemy for instance)
Unity let's you self-publish to a variety of platforms like App Store.
Prospective game industry employers would be more interested in a shipped game you made than any diploma, but having BOTH is even better.

It would be good if you have a formal degree or diploma in Game technology. Look for Animation Design and Media course.
