Are people usually mean to you or hard on you in the medical field?

Do people take their frustrations and anger out on you? I'm asking because I'm a pretty sensitive person.

Teresa’s Answer

Josie, like any profession, healthcare is rewarding and can be challenging too. It is generally a vulnerable time for a person who is sick or injured. Your sensitive nature can be such a bonus in the healthcare field. It requires empathy and acceptance of people. Healthcare leaders have placed mental health of workers at the top of the workforce agenda. There are resources to help your sensitivity develop into the strength it can be towards a fruitful and rewarding career.

You have to remember that a lot of your patients are not themselves due to the way they are feeling.

Rachael’s Answer

Hi Josie, patients can be rude or "mean" to medical professionals, but usually they are more upset at the situation or their medical condition than they are at you. Like Theresa said, being an empathetic person is very important in the medical field and while feeling "sensitive" could seem like a weakness, this is very much a strength. Being empathetic can help you relate to people and can help make those tough conversations with patients a little easier by helping them feel heard and giving them a space to process the information about their condition.

I have to note that during the schooling and training part of your education to become a medical professional, your professors, clinical instructors, and preceptors may be very hard on you to make sure you are prepared to enter the field. Again, this isn't personal but it can be an important part of the educational prosses to make sure you're ready to work independently in the field. I had many preceptors that were hard on me while I was studying to become an athletic trainer and they were some of my favorite preceptors because they really prepared me for my job and helped mold me into the AT I am today.
