Aisha’s Answer

Hi Aaron,

Just like the conductors of a grand orchestra, construction managers, who you might also know as general contractors or project managers, are the maestros of building projects. They harmoniously orchestrate the creation of a wide array of structures. These can range from cozy residential homes and towering commercial buildings to large industrial structures. They even oversee the construction of public works like roads and bridges.

Wishing you all the best!

Eric’s Answer

Aaron, a construction manager is usually the main contact between a building owner and the site superintendent. The superintendent is the one who is onsite coordinating with the various construction trades (concrete, steel, plumbing, electrical, etc.) to make sure that the work is scheduled appropriately and done correctly. The superintendent will work with the inspectors as well. The superintendent and the construction manager are usually part of the same firm. The construction manager usually works in the office and handles the purchases, budgets, schedules, payments to sub-contractors and submittals (e.g., steel shop drawings, mechanical cut sheets, etc.). The day-to-day activities are the role of the superintendent and, with the help of project engineers and coordinators, will also coordinate with the design team (architect & engineers) to ask questions and make sure the construction is in conformance with the plans. The construction manager will also coordinate with the design team but on bigger items that require the attention of the construction manager. The construction manager will work with the owner and often conducts weekly meetings with the owner and other design / construction representatives. This is to ensure that the project meets schedule and to address any changes or issues that arise during construction that are of a larger scale.
All the best,
Eric
