How does one become a Construction Flagger?
How would one like me go about becoming a Construction Flagger? Which is the best in the area, and what school would be required to become a Construction Flagger?

There are a couple of types of flaggers so it would be best if you are open to doing both construction and highway flagging. You would first graduate high school and obtain a high school diploma or GED. All the information you will need about your specific state can be found at the Minnesota Department of Transportation. I have left their web link for you below. You may also call them at (651) 296-3000. Since you want to know how to become a flagger, the website will provide you with information about training. It also has a Flagger Handbook that you can download and print for yourself to read at your leisure. It also has information about qualifications to be a flagger as well as a video that you can watch.
Usually government agencies or construction companies hire flaggers. You would be responsible for safe traffic flow control and making sure the work crew or others are aware of any safety situations while you are working as a flagger. Once you contact the Dept. of Transportation, ask them if you have to join a Union because in some towns and locales people join a union for this type of job. Your salary will depend on who hires you and your prospective employer will be the one to tell you how much the salary will be.

Usually you need to graduate high school, obtain a GED but I know many who did niether. As far as flaggers in my industry, they usually help equipment operators by looking out for blind spots, traffic, pedestrians, road hazards and overhead/congestion hazards. It requires a good attention to detail, good communication skills, the ability to time the operator, equipment and yourself. You must be able to direct others to stop as well as the operator. It's a serious position to have with great responsibility and at times you may be alone or in a team of spotters on one or several pieces of equipment. Usually at least for me, you are a rigger, operator, supervisor, helper or a laborer depending on your time, experience and craft. I hope this helps. Take care and stay blessed.
