What college major do I choose?

I am only still a 10th grader, but I want to look ahead at colleges and which major and minor to choose. I am looking to be in the healthcare field, I have looked at a physician's assistant. In my other question, I said that their job description intrigued me. I don't know what college I'm going to go to yet but I do want to know what classes/majors I should choose.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for the question. I am glad to hear that you have interest in medical health field.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about medical related careers first, e.g. Physiotherapist, Doctor, Nurse, Dentist, Pharmacists, Occupational Therapists, Phycologist, etc.
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue. The relevant subjects will be the major and minor you can target in the college
5. Explore the entry criteria of these subjects in the college
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Deb’s Answer

Colleges matter for program of interest and - unless you can cover everything with either private funding, scholarships, or grants - cost. Otherwise it doesn’t matter the college, online, in-person or hybrid.

What does matter is making everything count towards employment.

And especially doing what you enjoy - so enjoy figuring out what that is, too.

I recommend the following steps toward successful employment:

Deb recommends the following next steps:

Do what you love (and don’t be afraid to keep trying till you know what it is)
Choose a program that provides an internship/clinicals
Obtain the basics (a vocational or bachelor degree) at a community college to reduce costs
Choose a program that provides an opportunity for a credential on graduation - like P.A., R.N., M.D., R.C.I.S., E.M.T., etc
Volunteer in the health arena
