This is just a question I would ask an employer who's interviewing me

Thank you comment icon Hey Jayden, which company are you asking about? I notice that other learners in your area are sharing questions they might ask during an interview. Are you asking for feedback on this question? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Hi Jayden!

It is great that you are already thinking of questions to ask the interviewer during an interview! I think this question is headed in the right direction as it shows you are interested in learning more about what the company's strong points are for employee retention. Similar to the advice above, I would also recommend expanding on the question to include coverage over what keeps the interviewer with the company, especially if they have been with the company for several years.

Steve’s Answer

First, I want to say it is great that you think ahead enough to have some questions for the interviewer, I always look for interviewees to engage me instead of having the conversation one-way. I would suggest, if you are not already, doing some research on the company to add some questions more pointed to the company or even refine your initial question or it's follow-up to some specifics. It will help both drive the conversation and show you care enough to do your homework.

Too your question, and this is solely for my company as I have been here more than 3 decades, and it is my primary frame of reference :)

We live our values. We have 4 Core values: We do the right thing, We believe people count, We courageously shape our future together, We go above and beyond for the people we serve. These are made clear and leaders and employees alike work towards them, when we create business plans, requests, work efforts, etc. we always tie them back or make sure they are in alignment with these values.

Again, that is a short answer, and I would look for you to ask me more on that both to see that you have done your homework and not just had a question prepared for when I ask you do you have any questions for me. (Although at least having that one prepared is a lot better than saying No I don't have any questions)

Jim’s Answer

Jayden,

I would not ask this question in this way as I think it’s too general and may be off putting to some. Rather than asking “Why would you recommend working for this company?” I would rephrase and state “I’d be interested in hearing about why you chose to join the company”.
You can still get your answer and build on your question from there.

ShaRon’s Answer

Jayden,

I think its awesome that you are thinking about interviewing the interviewer! Just like they want to know about you and your skills, you want to walk a way with a firm understanding of what you are getting into. How you ask the questions you want to know about will have a lot of impact on how the individual sees you!

Ask questions that show you have done some research on the company. Go to their website and look at the products and services they offer - ask some questions about the future of those items. Look at the value /mission statement and ask for examples of how some of those things can be seen in their day to day operations. Ask about promotional opportunities and career advancement - how do you invest in your employees growth - classes, conventions, memberships in professional organization, educational degree/certifications, etc.

Find out who you will be speaking to and go to LinkedIn and find out something about them. Ask why they chose to work at the company and what motivates them to stay. Ask about if its different from previous employers (names you found on LI) and how their career has changed as a result of working at the company.

You can also do a Google search for feedback from Corporate HR Professionals about what are good questions to ask during an interview.

Good Luck, I am so proud that you are being proactive in preparing for interviews.

John’s Answer

It's commendable that you're taking the initiative to question your potential employer and that you've given it prior thought. From my own experiences, I usually uncover the reasons why I'd want to join a firm through the research I undertake about the company. Typically, this is sufficient for me to answer that question independently. However, what truly intrigues me is why they selected me for an interview. This gives me an insight into how I stand out among other applicants. So, rather than asking, "Why would you suggest someone to work for this company?" I'd propose the question, "What aspects of my qualifications appealed to you the most?" Understanding why a company would want to employ you is just as crucial as knowing why you'd want to work there.
