What are some good ways to make connections and get ahead while still in college?

Also, how can I land an internship in college and what year of college is best to complete one? What other things should I do in college to give me a more competitive edge for jobs when I graduate?

Hi Tamron - good question! Joining any student organization or group is a great way to connect in college. It gives you a opportunity to meet new people with similar interests and even build relationships with staff and faculty from your school. If available, on campus jobs are also a great way to connect with faculty and staff, while also gaining more work experience. I found these connections helpful once it was time to look for jobs and needed references.

Hi Tamron - great question. To answer the first part of your question - I think networking and making connections is definitely very important in college and it's great that you are proactively thinking about it. What I found worked best for me is joining various student organizations that were of interest to me on campus. These organizations opened me to a variety of different individuals who I still continue to talk to this day. Another great way to make connections is to attend on campus networking events. There are often numerous networking events held on campus to encourage students to meet and become acquainted with professionals within their field of interest. While your still in college, I would definitely encourage you to explore new organizations, meet new people and get out of your comfort zone at times to create new connections. You never know where these connections might lead you! Also definitely stop by the career center on your campus if you have not already to inquire about these type of events and opportunities.

Wish you the best of luck!

My best advice is to leverage your career center as much as you can and visit every career fair you can. This will help with your nerves and help you get the best resume you can. When you talk to these people, ask for feedback. It's the only way you'll get better or at least closer to what they are looking for. Let people know what you're looking for and see if there is any type of group on linkedIn or close by your university you can network with. Networking is key! The more people know you and what you're seeking, the more advocates you have. If your school has a big alumni organization, utilize it! I'm a Pennstater and went to every career fair I could and worked with our Career services to see what opportunities I had. What I realized was there were a LOT of employers seeking PSU students specifically. At my school they were very loyal to their students. That is how I found my first job along with most of my friends at the time. As for networking, take a pad of paper and think of who you think could help you achieve your goal of getting a job, who knows the most people, who is a natural connector, who do your friends and family know that you could talk to. It's a simple exercise, but it's a good start. Ask for 15 mins. of their time. You'll see most people will give that to you. It makes them feel good too to help someone. In terms of internships, I think the more you can do, the better (without sacrificing your grades, of course). Real life experience is incredibly valuable at your age. I hope this helps and GOOD LUCK to you.
