Janet’s Answer

The best college for psychology depends on what you want to do afterward getting your degree. There are many different subfield in psychology. For example, there is counseling and clinical psychology where you provide people with help with their problems, from mild to severe mental health issues. There are psychologists who work in industry in helping companies design environments for their workers, or in human resource departments working to help industry improve the productivity and adjustment of their employees. Academic or research psychologists work in colleges and universities teaching students and running investigations to further our knowledge and understanding of behavior, thinking, and development. School psychologists work with school-aged children with problems and their parents and teachers. You may not know what field of psychology you want until you have a college degree. I would recommend that you attend a college with at least 3 to 5 professors in psychology, a college where you believe you will be supported and feel comfortable that will also not leave you heavily in debt. Try to visit the college or university and talk to students and professors in the department.

Heather’s Answer

Choosing a school for psychology would depending on what you plan to do with your degree. There are many areas of psychology (is like saying you want to be a doctor- way too vague). Look for schools that are APA approved in their programming. It is easier to get into your graduate program as the application process is very competitive, if you did your undergrad with the school you are hoping to get into but it is no guarantee. Other things that help are your grades, service hours and in what, and how dedicated you are to the study of mental health, sports medicine, or the area you want to get into (employment, sports, clinical, forensic, etc.). Spend some time studying each area and know one or two that peak your interest now as your beginning classes will all be the same but specialization will come quickly. Hope this helps.

Mike’s Answer

This is a complicated question because it is also about who you are as a person and what part of psychology you find interesting. I would read about the different types of psychologists and the conditions in which they work. I believe that the Occupational Outlook Handbook ( a US Government publication) is a good choice for this because it also has updated information about to easy it is to find work, pay, etc. And I would also look at the costs of various colleges (and graduate schools) to try to avoid graduating with large school debts. As you try to calculate this out you should be aware that the reputation of the schools you've attended will fade away with the years in the field and that what colleagues and employers think of the quality of your actual work will be more important than where your degrees came from. However, it would be important to attend colleges which will be sufficiently respected to get you into APA-approved graduate schools and internships.

I second the responses given by most to include considering the sub field of Psychology that you are interested in. The most popular field is Clinical Psychology which entails the ability to assess, diagnose, make treatment recommendations, and treat mental health disorders. Clinical Psychologists are also found in colleges and universities engaged in teaching and research. Some of us hold varied positions making the profession as flexible as you want it to be. For example, I conduct evaluations, brief screenings and treatment, DBT (a form of therapy), and teach.
Some clinicians may specialize in Clinical Forensic or Clinical Neuropsychology based on the field of interest.
All of the above, however, applies to graduate school. If you are in High School currently, you must first pursue your Bachelors degree, so find a university that offers a solid undergraduate psychology degree that can lay the foundation for graduate school, and prepare you for your search.
Regarding graduate school, I also advise that you find an APA accredited program that offers some funding to ensure quality training experiences and to reduce the cost and resulting debt. However, my program was not accredited and I am still doing fine, it’s all about what we make it to be. In my case, I had very good training experiences and a good dose of motivation and dedication.
Lastly, upon graduating with your Bachelor’s degree, find a university that offers a masters and doctoral degree in 5-6 years rather than attending two separate programs that may take 8 or more years combined.

Well, that depends on your wholistic plan to do with your major in psychology. Some schools are good for undergraduate while others are best for graduate level psychology.

Allison’s Answer

it can depend on your preference with the school type and how far you're looking to go. Some programs are focused more on the scientific studies (lab/studies etc for higher level schooling) and some are more focused on the emotional approach. I would highly suggest Antioch in Santa Barbara, CA (my first choice-amazing teachers and programs-more emotional approach) or UCSB (more scientific approach)

Anyela Tatiana’s Answer

In principle, it should be clear what you want to specialize in, for this it is recommended to ask yourself and identify which skills are the most representative as a professional and still improve the technique in terms of experience. When it is clear to you what subject or branch of your profession you want to improve, you must choose which universities offer the subjects to work with in education and thus manage to take one of your interests and start studying. As a recommendation beyond locating in a renamed institution, you should feel comfortable in the subject you chose to specialize in and depend on your time and dedication to stand out as a unique professional in your chosen subject.

Daniel’s Answer

Great question!

Psychology is a huge field, and it can be applied in many ways. The professors at each university usually specialize in a certain field.

My advice is that you can refer to some of the rankings listed online for "Best Colleges for Psychology" but don't stop there. You need to figure out your "brand"--what do you want to do with psychology? What is your "dream job"?

Maybe your dream job is to be in business/marketing and use your knowledge of psychology to help understand consumer behavior. Or maybe you want to help people improve their mental health--then clinical psychology might be your field! Or maybe you want to help families and teens become better at relationships? Some "dream jobs" will require advanced degrees, so this first college you attend might not be as important as your next college.

So there's a lot to figure out.

I know it might be too early to really know what you want to do because you're still in high school, and nobody expects you to know exactly what you want to do yet.

The best thing you can do now is look at lists online, and then assemble your own list by eliminating schools that don't offer a program that's good for you.

Daniel recommends the following next steps:

Research the faculty at the psychology department. Check if they have any videos on YouTube. This is a good way to find out if any specific professor's work inspires you and that can help you find a good school for you.
Check out the student newspaper website. Often they will feature interviews with students to discuss their majors.
Read a few books (or book summaries) written by different psychologist (I would recommend checking out the books or articles written by professors teaching at universities which are on your list)

Collette’s Answer

If you wish to achieve a Bachelor's of Arts or Bachelor's of Science Degree in Psychology I strongly recommend Southern New Hampshire University. The faculty are heart warming and they genuinely care about your academic journey.

If you wish to achieve a Masters of Arts or Master's of Science degree in Psychology, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology offers a licensure and non-licensure tract. Also, if you wish to not take a licensure tract then the University of North Dakota offers an affordable online program.
