Semilore if you’ve already earned a few B’s or C’s in high school, don’t worry! Very few colleges would expect an applicant to have a perfect GPA. However, having a high GPA from taking advanced and honors classes and/or earning A’s will show colleges that you’re a hardworking student who is willing to embrace a challenge.
Your grade point average (GPA) is the sum of all your course grades throughout your high school career divided by the total number of credits. Most high schools (and colleges) report grades on a 4.0 scale. The top grade, an A, equals a 4.0. Colleges will also consider the rigor of your high school schedule. Did you take Honors and AP courses when they were available. Were you enrolled in your high school’s IB program. Besides doing well in the courses you took, colleges want to see that you are challenging yourself academically.
In addition to your GPA, admissions officers will look at your standardized test scores, college essays, extracurricular activities, leadership and community involvement, and your scores on AP exams (not just the grade in the class). There’s a reason colleges ask you to list all your extracurricular activities on your application. The things you do outside of the classroom show that you’re an interesting, engaged, and well-rounded person. Extracurriculars include activities like music, sports, volunteer work, and academic clubs. Typically, admissions officers are looking for your dedication to one or two activities. They have gone on record, time and time again, that they would prefer to find a student who is dedicated and passionate about a few things, rather than a student who is only marginally involved in a number of activities.

Hello Semilore,
Thanks for asking! That answer, in my opinion, depends from person to person, but I think a good High School GPA (unweighted) is above a 3.7, as it shows you are at least an A- student in school. Of course the weighted nature of having honors and AP classes will change that! Even if you have a good GPA, there are other things that are important for high schoolers in order to get into a competitive university.
Hopefully this helps!
Thanks,
Johan

Hello,
A 3.0 is average for American high school students. Even then 3.0 is good and anything above that would be considered above avergae.
