What are the different types of jobs in architecture? I think I want to become an architect but I don't know enough to make the decision.

I want to get a degree in architecture. Im not sure if architecture is the best route. I'm not sure exactly what an architect does. I like working with my hands. I like designing. I like problem solving. I was a carpenter for a year, and a mechanic before that. Im lost in the details. Drafting, designing and building all sound very appealing to me. I'm just not sure what routes and possibilities are on the path.

Hello Rashaun,

While you may wish to go down the structural architecture path, there is also an IT architectural path. I am an IT Solution Architect. In my field, we obtain requests and review the scope of the project. Based on the project request, we determine which of the company's internal applications would be impacted by the change. We meet with each impacted application's contacts/leads and get their feedback on the impact to their team. We do this for all the applications we need more information from. Then we estimate each application's costs. Once the Solution Architect has all the necessary information, we document each application's impact costs, create a flow diagram showing how all the applications interface with each other. Then we submit our documentation to the Project Manager so that they can seek funding for the client, based on the Solution Architect's documentation.

There are also higher levels of Solution Architects. Some of them build and update the entire network for companies. I just thought I would share this as another option for your architectural career. I wish you the best in your career path!

Based on your interests and skills, architecture offers diverse opportunities. As an architect, you'd design structures, blend creativity with problem-solving, and oversee construction. Consider roles like architectural technologist, specializing in technical aspects; interior designer, focusing on spaces; or urban planner, shaping communities. Explore these paths to find your fit.

Hi Rashaun!
I'm an Interior Designer, not the same as an architect but i hope my answer can help you.
There are different areas for an architect, you can do big or small projects, you can even consider working with an interior designer and make a team! You can do the technical drawings for an architecture studio, floorplans or different technical pieces. The architect does not build, it designs and calculates, it studies structures. If you like designing you could try doing a short course on interiorisim, so that you can start with something more micro and then going big with architecture! I totally love it and made me fall in love with design, details, even constructive ones!

I recommend you to watch videos like "one day in my life as an architect" or see different portfolios so that you can see in depth what they do. I hope this helps! You can always reach out to me, lots of luck!

Henry’s Answer

Hello Rashaun! As an architect, my responsibilities encompass tackling a variety of issues related to building structures, with a special focus on ensuring adherence to building regulations. No matter the challenge, my goal is to devise solutions that are welcoming to all, prioritize safety, and optimize efficiency.

Yet, I don't perform these tasks single-handedly. I'm usually supported by a group of skilled designers and engineers who assist me in identifying the optimal solution. My role could be likened to that of a quarterback in a football team, where I strategize on the best way to advance the ball down the field.
