Hi, thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. As long as the career is what you like or interest, it is the right career for you.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what you have interest, eg your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc and identify the related careers
Eg if you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Nathaniel P.’s Answer

Your adventure should always start with two crucial inquiries: 1) What activities bring me joy? and 2) What am I proficient at?

I've personally realized that there are no universally wrong careers, only ones that are unsuitable for me. Many people have multiple careers throughout their lives, while others remain in one or two. Your life's desires and passions can align, but first, you need to identify what you love, what ignites your spirit, and what abilities you possess or wish to acquire. The subsequent phase of your journey involves understanding that there are no simple solutions or shortcuts. The real value lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself! Every twist, turn, revelation, or obstacle offers chances for personal growth and resilience. You might enjoy your career, but love a different activity even more, preferring to keep it as a personal hobby rather than a profession.

Regardless of where you are in life, strive to find opportunities to volunteer with local community groups, government agencies, or churches. Are there school counselors available who could provide some guidance? Is there an adult you can consult for insights based on their real-world experiences? What about local community or technical colleges? Libraries are excellent resources for research and potential answers, offering books, community outreach programs, and access to local business leaders who might be able to offer direct advice.

Even the most brilliant minds faced challenges on their path to success. They are eager to share their experiences and achievements, and the lessons they've learned. Remember, failure and success are intertwined, connected by the lessons we learn and how we handle each situation. Don't fear failure, and don't assume you'll always succeed. Pursue knowledge, seek the truth, and continue to explore, but remember to be patient. You'll need time to reflect and take action!

Nathaniel P. recommends the following next steps:

Local libraries or community centers
Community leaders or colleges
Google search top 10+ best careers in the next 15+ years

I would also suggest volunteering places and taking note of roles and responsibilities that you feel drive you. Not only will you be exploring places to volunteer but you can explore different roles. See what fits and what feels right. Not everything will be easy but some challenges will feel more exciting!

There really is no such thing as choosing the "wrong career". I would first think about what your general interests are. You could start with something as high level as numbers vs. words (ie: do you tend to lean towards math / science/ computer vs. writing / creative arts). If you have a general sense of were you lean, you can go from there. But if you dont, that's okay too!

You can experiment and get a preview of potential careers through:

(1) Volunteer work
(2) Internships
(3) Shadowing
(4) Identifying mentors

The more you get exposed to, the more you can determine for yourself what you like and dont like. Also dont worry too much about choosing the "wrong" job. People can always reset, repivot - the "wrong" thing to do is to feel like youre stuck.

LinkedIn is a great resource to get connected with people. Dont be afraid of "cold calling". I just received a kind note from someone I had never spoken to before asking to connect to talk about my experiences in navigating my career. I was more than happy to help!

Hello Joseph! I'd recommend taking a personality test, such as the Myers-Briggs Psychology Test available at https://www.16personalities.com/. It's a great tool to discover your unique personality type according to the Jungian theory. After you've identified your personality type, they offer a wealth of career options that perfectly align with your specific personality. Take some time to explore these careers and see which ones resonate with your interests and strengths. This could be a fantastic way to steer you towards the ideal career that's just right for you!
