James’s Answer

Hello Austin,

Although I am not personally involved in the sports management field, I was able to to conduct some research about the question you asked. In the research I conducted online, I came across a website called the Sports Management Degree Hub. According to an article posted by James Atkins on this website, "There are many benefits to a sports management career. Not only do people get to work in a field they love but they also get to meet industry leads: everyone from talented athletes and managers to brilliant executives and marketing heads. Health and dental insurance in this industry also tend to be excellent. Most people often score discounted tickets to major sporting events, apparel and more" (Atkins, 2013). These are a few of the benefits of going into the sports management field. There is a lot more interesting information in the article regarding the field of study you are interested in. In my references, a link to the article will be included. I hope this bit of knowledge helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to post them here. Thank you for using Career Village!

Deirdre’s Answer

Hi Austin,

I was in the sports management field earlier in my career. I worked for the NHL as an intern for a stretch, then I worked for the Atlanta Falcons as a Game Day Operations person and I also did Sports Marketing for the Atlanta Thrashers.

The advantages are such - you work in a field that you're passionate about and you love what you do. It's an incredibly energetic field where you can see your work on TV playing live. The field is somewhat smaller than any other industries so you have a close knit community, even in the largest fields, and if you have a transferable skill from one sport to the other, then you can explore a bunch of sports without needing to know the explicit operations of it. You have a chance to meet some of your idols or others that make a large impact.
