About

I am a cosmetologist and love the beauty industry, from hair and make-up, to nails, and even fashion and shoes. Cosmetologists deal not only with appearance and beauty of the skin, hair, and nails, but also with the health and wellness of the skin, hair, and nails. Hydrotherapy treatments and programs allow a cosmetologist to promote not only the general appearance and beauty of the client but to also work with the underlying principles of the health and wellness of beauty. It brings me great pleasure to not only make a person feel and look beautiful, but also to support his/her personal health and wellness.

Gannon’s Career Stories

How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?

Besides having a passion for hair, makeup and style, there are other reasons for pursuing a career in cosmetology. Assisting other people to look good is fun and fulfilling. If you enjoy working with your hands and regard yourself a social person, a career as a cosmetologist may be right for you. Great Things About a Career in Cosmetology There are many pros to being a cosmetologist. The following describes how this career can impact your life. 1. BE A BUSINESS OWNER Did you know that about 43% of cosmetologists and 72% of barbers are self-employed? This means that you can decide on your work hours and how many clients you wish to see. It also gives you the flexibility to take time off when you wish. You do have to tailor your work-time to meet your client’s needs. Thus, you may choose to work some weekends. Most of the time, you’re in control. 2. VARIED OPPORTUNITIES Completing a cosmetology license opens many doors. You can work in a salon, as a salon manager, or even open your own salon. Stores hire cosmetologists to work as makeup sales associates as well. This is only a sample of what you can do with your initial license. 3. NEVER A DULL MOMENT The beauty industry is a moving and evolving place. New styles, trends, and fashions constantly emerge. This means you must work to stay at the top of the curve. You’ll also continue to learn and change as a professional. You won’t face boredom and get in a rut. The clients will provide an ever-challenging environment. 4. MEET LOTS OF PEOPLE If you’re a people person, this will be your happy place. There will be an ongoing stream of new and returning clients. You can develop relationships over the years. Hairstylists and barbers often share in their clients up and downs. They celebrate homecomings, proms, and weddings. You get to play a key role in these milestones. Many cosmetologists become their client’s confidants. You will hear many new and interesting stories. Part of your role is to engage your clients during their visit. 5. PEOPLE OF ALL BACKGROUNDS WELCOME The American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) values diversity. This industry employs more women and minorities than any other in the United States. Salons and spas are filled with employees from every walk of life. The atmosphere promotes and celebrates individuality. 6. FLEX YOUR CREATIVE MUSCLES Do you need to be creative in your daily life? Cosmetology involves developing a style to enhance your client’s appearance. You also work with the creative spirit of your client. Some love to play with colors or new trends or want to make a big change. There’s a fine line between different and downright bad. As an expert, you guide your clients toward the light and they love you for it. 7. OPPORTUNITY TO EARN COMMISSIONS Many Cosmetologists can earn commissions selling hair care and beauty products. When you use a product on the client, they often ask what it is and how they can get it. They want to keep the look you give them when they walk out the door. This provides a perfect customer base for promoting and selling beauty supplies. You can earn extra money with little effort. 8. STEPPINGSTONE TO OTHER CAREERS Once you have gained experience and made contacts with key people, you may find yourself in a new role. Many cosmetologists go on to other exciting careers. The following are some examples: Fashion Show Stylist How would you like to work with runway models? You will help transform the actor into the character. Celebrity or Personal Stylist Who’s your favorite celebrity? What if they hired you to take care of their hair and makeup? You could work with actors, news anchors, musicians, and even politicians. Film and Theater Stylist Most productions hire stylists as part of their core crew. You may be assigned to specific actors or you may rotate. This job often involves special effects makeup and hair. It will be your job to ensure that the actor’s appearance doesn’t change between scenes or film takes. This means you will stay on set and make adjustments as needed. You’ll have the opportunity to get to know people you would never meet elsewhere. Brand Artistic Director If you stay on the cutting edge of fashion, your future may lie in becoming an artistic director. Different brands and salons hire artistic directors. Their job is to manage the creative direction of the company. You will design the imagery and concepts to make the organization stand apart.
