What is some advice you'd give to someone trying to balance work and life at the same time/?

I sometimes struggle to separate myself from work to live an actual life instead of a 9-5 robot.

Hi Rebecca,

Finding balance can be a challenge, but it is definitely achievable. As a previous commenter shared, using a time management tool like Google can be extremely helpful. Also, you need to prioritize YOU! It's important to know that we should work to live but not live to work. Work will always be there but you won't be able to take care of yourself if your cup is empty. Even during your work day, schedule a 30 minute meeting a day just for you to have a moment to decompress. Take the PTO! Take the PTO! Even if you don't have anywhere to go, TAKE THE PTO. Find hobbies and events that fill your cup because if you have a balance of wants and needs, you will fill more fulfilled.

It is a good question that every human being should ask himself, I will try to give you an answer as assertive as possible: I am 58 years old, I have a great career as a doctor, but I lost my children's childhood years for work, so I regret not having been a better father. For this reason my advice is, do not be behind your career and forget about your family, that is the worst thing any human being can do, leave aside the children and family for work, however passionate it is, another thing would be not having a family and devote yourself only to your passion, but still, in the long run it will not be the best ... So balance means giving quality time and in moderate quantity to your loved ones, and develop a good agenda to get the best of your work and your family in that balance you're looking for. In reality the family is the most important thing, if you want a full and satisfying life because you are part of a chain of human beings and you are an important link for your life to be pleasant in time with those who are part of your life!

Choose a career with a helping purpose
have a family when you feel ready
Make decisions that fit your family commitment, align them and always find time for both.
and above all, look for the values and pass on the same values that your parents have given you, the love of family will always be the most important.

This is a great question. Let us break it down for a moment into terms (definition) the word work is defined as when an individual performs work or fulfills duties regularly for wages or salary. The word life is defined as the sequence of physical and mental experiences that make up the existence of an individual. Out of these two words which is more essential to you. Work allows you to have the basic necessities which are shelter, basic living necesities , as well as pay bills. But life is everything else from a stroll with your pet in the park creating memories with family even traveling near or far. The poont is no matter what job or career you choose the one thing you can't buy is time. My advice to you is that if you have a job that is a standard 40 hours work those 40 hours and create a calendar and fill it with 8 hours of activities or mini adventures that allow you to decompress from work. Remember 8 hours work , 8 hours sleep and 8 hours to do what you enjoy makes 24 hours / day. Don't be to hard on yourself it may take a couple of tries till you take back your time . I hope this advice helped. Here is a quote from Steve Jobs -“Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful...that’s what matters to me.”

Thank you for your question. Firstly, you need to find a time management tool, eg Google Calendar, MS Outlook, phone calendar, etc
Below are my suggestions:
1. Put down the time you need to attend classes/ go to work
2.If you are a student, assign some time every day on your assignment & project. Also, review the material covered in the class on the day.
3. Make sure you have enough sleep and do some exercise
4. You can the assign the remaining time for your leisure, friends & family gathering, etc
You don't need to fill up your schedule completely. Keep some 'me' time for reflection and relaxation.
