Barry Eugene’s Answer

Nursing programs can be competitive. However, I was selected on my first attempt, many years ago. Each school has specific criteria that must be met prior to any acceptance. There are academic mandates, medical requirements, and background checks that must be completed. Usually, there are more applicants that classroom assignments that are available. Please do your research about your potential nursing program. It is important to look at each school/college that you may be interested in attending. Try to complete their specific requirements prior to applying. Please do not become discouraged if you are not selected for your first choice. Here is a link that may provide you with additional information (see below) and best wishes to you in your academic endeavor. https://www.nursinglicensure.org/articles/getting-into-a-nursing-program.html

Patty’s Answer

Dear MaryKate,

When I applied to nursing school I only applied to one. I was pretty naive and had no idea it was as competitive as it was. The only school I applied to was very close to where I lived and just seemed like the most logical choice. Only once I was accepted, after my first and only attempt, did I learn that some of my classmates had been accepted after having applied numerous times.

It can be a pretty rigorous application and interview process, however, remember that they are preparing you for a career which is rigorous in and of itself. From the moment you apply for a seat in the nursing program to the time you learn you passed your NCLEX it is a stressful ride. I wouldn't change it for a thing. It has proven to be a very fulfilling and exhilarating career choice. All the best to you.

Sincerely,

Patty Born
