Hello Jade!

I would first say - stay away from credit cards - not sure if this is still a thing on college campuses or not but don't get enticed with the give aways and fast talking that these reps use to get you to sign up.

During my first year in college (and beyond) I only purchased what I needed - took public transportation to get around (rates are cheaper than an Uber/etc) or see if you can carpool with some other people when they make a grocery store run - you can chip in a couple of dollars for gas (as well as the other car poolers). Also before you get on campus - look at getting a step ahead on getting the basics (soap/body & skin care/etc) before you move onto campus - this will give you a few months where you have what you need then you can replenish your supply once you are home from winter break for the new semester. If you have a family or friend that has a Costco/BJ/Sam's club membership this is really helpful because you can buy in bulk.

Hope this helps Jade! Best of luck to you on your college journey!! Kudos for being first generation - you should be very proud of this accomplishment and remember give yourself grace - do your best and don't compare yourself to others or what you don't have - you are there because of your hard work and dedication!!

Hi Jade!

Being a first-generation student is a big step, and I know it can be on your mind a lot. But remember, you have so much support available! I really encourage you to connect with a career advisor as soon as you start college. Let them know your concerns—they're there to help. There are tons of scholarships out there, and a career advisor can guide you to the ones that fit you best.

Finding a job on campus is another great idea. It makes getting to work and class so much easier, and these jobs usually fit around your class schedule. Plus, it’s a great way to meet people! When it comes to saving money, consider buying in bulk at places like Costco or Sam’s Club. You can split costs with friends or roommates, which helps a lot. Also, don’t forget about using coupons and signing up for store rewards to earn some cashback.

Being a first-generation student might be challenging, but it's also incredibly rewarding. You've got this! Keep believing in yourself!
