How will a B.A. in political science help me in law school?

I am a freshman in political science at Eastern Illinois University, and I am worried about not standing out during law school applications. I have a 4.0 and I am very interested in politics, I just want to make sure I am doing what is the best for me :) #Spring25

Hi, Maycie,

You're right that many law school applicants major in political science, but there are other ways to make your application stand out. A strong GPA is a great start! While in college, take a mix of classes, especially those that improve your writing skills, like seminar classes, and your logic skills, which you can gain from philosophy, math, or science courses. Get involved in extracurricular activities that build your presentation skills. Things like mock trial or debate are great options. Law schools also value students who contribute to their communities, so consider doing community service. While grades and LSAT scores are important, law schools also want to see that you are active and have diverse experiences, as this will make you a better law student and lawyer.

Good luck!

Maybe: Chill - you're doing fine. Major in anything YOU are interested in. Lawyers come in all sizes and shapes. The better rounded you are as a peeson makes you a better lawyer. I, too, love politics. I had 6 majors in college, finally ending in political science. Law is actually about 25% politics - you negotate on behalf of clients all the time.
As a freshman, just keep up the good grades, enjoy your time in college (you'll miss these days later in life) and get involved in local politics. Always keep in mind that these are the days later in life you want to look back on fondly. So go enjoy!

Hi Maycie,

I also studied Political Science in college, and now I'm a lawyer. Political Science classes are great for helping you think critically, dive deep into complex topics, and improve your public speaking. While it's not required, I focused on classes with legal themes and joined Model U.N. If you can, I strongly suggest interning or working part-time in a law office. It’s a fantastic way to discover what you love about the profession. These experiences will really strengthen your applications.

You have plenty of time to explore what interests you and shape your journey. It's awesome that you're already thinking about these things—keep your eyes open and enjoy your college years!

Good luck!!
