Where are some IT companies that are hiring near me?

I have used LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. and still haven't found an IT job. I am looking for something part time that doesn't require any certifications or a bachelor's degree. But since I'm in college, these jobs are hard to find.

Sneha’s Answer

Hi Addison! It can definitely feel tough to find the right fit while you’re in college, but don’t get discouraged because many people have started strong IT careers from exactly where you are. Try focusing on entry-level roles like help desk support, QA testing, or junior tech support at local startups, university IT departments, or remote freelance platforms like Upwork or FlexJobs. Also, don’t underestimate the power of networking with professors or classmates who may know about part-time gigs that aren’t posted online. Keep applying, stay curious, and remember that getting your foot in the door is often the biggest step. Good luck!

Addison,

The reality right now is - it is a TOUGH market out there. Companies are laying off workers and this has been going on since last year. Hiring on a sporadic (at best) basis right now. Hang in there - keep trying and wish you the best! Hopefully the job market picks up soon.

If you can't find a job with a company try some of the part time gig work outlets like Fiverr, Flexjobs, etc. Maybe you'll find more hiring there, and its a good starting point.

Dr. Rita’s Answer

If you are seeking part time work while still in college, the best place to start is your college career center may have a list of opportunities for internships and part time work that you can look into.

I also strongly recommend you look beyond IT companies. Larger companies have IT / technology departments that may hire part time or have paid internship opportunities. Also - consider small and medium local businesses that can use part time IT support - to gain experience.

Finally, always go directly to the business web sites and look at open positions. Consider sending an email / cover letter describing what you are looking for.

All the best in your job search!

Patrick’s Answer

Addison,

I was in your shoes while attending college full-time. My first IT job that I acquired was because of my professor. She hooked me up with an internship application and class that I was not aware of until I spoke to her. The best thing you can do is work with your educational institution to see if they have connections to get you that first position.

Otherwise, jobs are not always available and I advise you to continue watching the job boards when a new one comes up. I was in an area where those jobs were rare, so they usually appeared when someone quit their job or got promoted. I would also suggest working in help desk or service desk (though they do not compensate that well) as they require very little work experience. They are a great first experience jobs which can be used to pivot into an speciality in the IT world as they teach you about basic IAM, troubleshooting, soft skill communication, etc.

Best of luck!

- Patrick

If you're in college and seeking part-time IT work, start by visiting your university’s career center. They often offer exclusive job listings, connections with local companies, and valuable internship opportunities. Joining an IT-related student club or reaching out to professors and alumni can expand your network and uncover opportunities that may not be widely advertised.

Make your online presence stand out by updating your LinkedIn profile with your skills, relevant projects, and certifications. A well-curated portfolio on platforms like GitHub or WordPress is essential to showcase your work and capabilities. You can also explore job boards such as AngelList, We Work Remotely, SimplyHired, and Glassdoor to find part-time roles. For freelancing, platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, Toptal, PeoplePerHour, and Guru can be a great starting point.

Networking is crucial in the job search process. Instead of only applying to job postings, actively engage with professionals on LinkedIn and attend tech meetups, conferences, workshops, hackathons, and coding events. Volunteering to assist small businesses with their IT needs or contributing to open-source projects is a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience, build your portfolio, and demonstrate your expertise.

Internships offer invaluable experience, and many companies offer part-time positions. Check out platforms like Internships.com, WayUp, or your college’s job board for internship opportunities. Earning certifications like Google IT Support, CompTIA ITF+, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect can enhance your resume and make you more competitive in the job market.

Temporary staffing agencies like Robert Half Technology or Apex Systems specialize in part-time IT roles. Many local businesses and startups also need IT support but can’t afford full-time staff, so reaching out directly could lead to freelance or part-time opportunities.

Lastly, focus on personal projects and freelance work to build practical experience. Although it may take time to land your ideal job, persistence and a proactive approach will help you secure the right part-time IT position and open the door to future full-time opportunities.

Good luck in your job search!
