Jose’s Answer

Hi Alfonso,

Instead of trying to perfectly split my time, I've found that writing down my priorities for the week, the next day, and even the month (like appointments and hobbies) helps me balance work and life. I check off what I accomplish each day and make sure my tasks are doable within the time I have. Sometimes, I need to adjust my schedule, but this helps me understand how changes can affect other plans.

Martha’s Answer

This is a terrific question, Alfonso. I suspect that many could relate to it.

Rather than aim for 50:50 time distribution all the time, I accept an ebb and flow between work and my social life. By that, I mean that sometimes work will take more than its share of time, such as at the end of the quarter or when there are many proposals or many classes. But sometimes my life outside of work will take precedence and I will need to take personal time off or adjust my work schedule. For example, I might take time off for a family event or to visit relatives or I might need to start work late because I was in the emergency room with a friend past midnight (did actually happen) or take a longer lunch break to see a friend and work later to make up for it.

I realize that editing films could be quite time- and attention-consuming. Your family and friends should understand that. However, letting them know that you are going to be difficult to reach for a while would likely be appreciated. And quick texts to let them know you are okay and thinking about them or even an amusing image could go a long way to supporting relationships.

Good luck!

Nayra’s Answer

Hi Alfonso,

This is such a great question to start with and very important for you to think about before starting your career journey. To achieve work-life balance, it is important to set up separate goals and define your priorities both in your personal life and at work. Personally, I manage my personal calendar the same way that I do for work, to ensure that I have enough room to recharge, socialize and prep for the next week. What worked for me was blocking time on my calendar to dedicate it to the things that are important to me outside of work.

It takes practice, but over time this allowed me to truly disconnect after work hours. Think about it this way: when I am at work, I give my 100%, and when I am with my family off work my 100% needs to be focused on my wellbeing and the people I love.

I hope this helps!
