What is the absolute most important thing to consider/keep in mind when trying to land an internship as an undergraduate student with little experience in your field?
I'm currently a first-year civil engineering student at the Colorado School of Mines, and I'm interested in getting an internship next summer. My school hosts a career fair, which is intended to connect students with companies for internships and careers, but I'm concerned my application does not stand out due to my current lack of experience in the civil engineering field.

Hi Anneliese,
I'd say that the most important things to keep in mind when trying to land that internship is to genually be excited about it, be willing to go farther and beyond to make the opportunity successful than anyone else, listen a lot, show your ability to add value, show your ability to learn and execute what you've learned. Be confident and sale the fact that you're the right person for that internship.
You got this! Best of luck. Stay positive, Never, ever give up.

Hi Anneliese!
My best piece of advice would be to go to these career fairs and just have conversations . There are many student who look good on paper, but a recruiter will remember a good conversation more than just some credentials on paper. Be curious - ask questions about the business, the work they're involved in, and their values. Do a little research beforehand on the companies you're interested in. Find a program or value of the company that looks interesting and ask about that. You can also do research on some of the projects/work this company has done and start a conversation about that. Also share your interests and career aspirations. Let them get to know you! The point of an internship is for you to learn, so they are not expecting you to have a vast amount of experience. Most companies are just looking for someone eager to learn and easy to work with.
Hope this helps, and best of luck! You got this!
