What was the most useful thing you learned while studying to become a teacher?

I'm currently a senior wanting to go to college to become a teacher, and I know I will learn a lot from my professors and CTs, but I'm curious if any current/former teachers can tell me what's the most important piece or have significant advice to share! ( What they might not tell me in college ) I feel like there is a lot to learn about going into the education field, so I like to hear directly from teachers / admin about the experience. Thank you!

Hi Victor!

Great that you are interested in becoming a teacher. Teacher preparation programs vary a lot in their philosophy and content, and sometimes you don't get a lot of say in what kinds of professors you'll learn pedagogy from. Still, the most important lesson I learned is that teaching is a deeply personal act, and while you can learn SO much by observing expert teachers at work, you can never really know how it will work for you and your classes until you try (and try again, because sometimes you or your students haven't found the groove the first time). Being gentle with yourself and your expectations of what you "should" be doing is key to making sure you're the best teacher you can be.

Studying to become a teacher is a transformative journey, and one of the most valuable lessons often comes from experience rather than textbooks. While pedagogy and classroom management are crucial, the most important takeaway is that teaching is deeply personal—every educator develops their own style through trial and error. Observing experienced teachers is helpful, but the real learning happens when you step into the classroom, adapt, and refine your approach. Flexibility, patience, and self-compassion are key because teaching is an evolving process, and even the best educators face challenges. Embracing imperfection and continuously seeking ways to improve will make you not only a skilled teacher but also a resilient and inspiring one.
