How can I connect my work in local food systems and social media outreach to a future in sustainable international policy or food justice?

I'm currently a college sophomore studying International Affairs and French, with a strong interest in sustainability and food justice. I work at a local farmers market. A lot of my work involves social media, newsletters, and outreach, helping connect people to local food systems and supporting small-scale producers. I’m also a Service Intern and have over 460 hours of community service experience. Long-term, I'm passionate about global equity, sustainability, and finding ways to make food systems more just, especially in under-resourced communities. I'd love advice on how to turn this mix of grassroots service and communication work into a career in international policy or nonprofit food justice.

Ali’s Answer

Your work in local food systems and social media outreach provides a strong foundation for a future in sustainable international policy or food justice by building essential skills and perspectives. Your hands-on experience with local food systems deepens your understanding of supply chains, food sovereignty, and community resilience—key issues in global food justice. Meanwhile, your social media outreach demonstrates your ability to communicate complex ideas, mobilize public engagement, and advocate for change—critical skills for policy influence. To bridge these experiences to international work, consider pursuing further education in global food policy or sustainable development, seeking roles with NGOs or international organizations focused on food security, or leveraging your digital advocacy skills to amplify global food justice movements. By framing your local work as part of a broader systemic struggle, you can position yourself as a practitioner who connects grassroots realities to policy solutions.

Hi Olivia, from what I read a lot of nonprofit organizations could benefit in the future from someone with your interests and full commitment. I work in a strategy and communications firm (that could be another option, btw) that works for and with mission-driven organizations, and I feel a lot of what you share is right up that alley. From doing some research on idealist for new postings, to reaching out to entities or organizations you admire or would love to work with, I think you can have a pretty promising future. If there is anything I can help with further, lmk.
