How did you decide what type of lawyer to be?

I would love to be a homicide prosecutor here in Nevada, but am conflicted because I don't know what my options are. I find this specific field interesting, but I don't know what else is out there, and if I would even like it better. I know I don't want to be a divorce attorney, and I don't want to be an injury attorney. What can I look in to in order to make this decision?

You should become a divorce lawyer, but if you don't like this, then you should become a corporate lawyer for a company.

I get why you're unsure, as there are many types of law to choose from after graduation. Assuming you haven't started law school yet, here's some advice:

Many law students decide on their career path while in school. In your first year, you'll take criminal law. If you like it, consider a summer job at a local prosecutor's office. Most large offices have programs to introduce students to the criminal justice system. You can also earn credit by working there during the academic year. Keep in mind, in large offices, you won't only handle murder cases. There's a career path that involves other types of law first, and even in felony courtrooms, you'll deal with various crimes.

There are far more options than just divorce or corporate law. Divorce law is part of family law, so those firms do more than just divorces. Similarly, corporate law covers a wide range, from in-house company work to specialized firm work.

Law connects to many fields, so I suggest thinking about what interests you and seeing how law fits in.
