Hi Sydney, in my case I had no idea what area I wanted to pursue when I was in University. I did an internship on educational psychology and another one in psychotherapy/counseling. I didn't like either. When I graduated uni, I decided to work onboard a cruise ship as a bar waitress while trying to figure things out. There, I realized there were opportunities in HR for psychologists. I applied to a coordinator role and I got it! I ended up enjoying it very much and now I'm an Hr Director.

Ken’s Answer

Sydney,

For me, the first class I took in Sensation & Perception was all I needed to lock in my decision. My degree is Experimental Psychology with a focus on vision. The major appealed to me because it is very quantitative and it uses the scientific method to assess causation. A related major is Cognitive Psychology. Discovery is very exciting!

I completely understand your difficulty though; every topic in psychology appeals to me! I recommend that you take an introduction to psychology class, if you haven't already done so, and really think about your future. The Ikigai framework is a useful way to think about all the important parameters involved in making a good decision. After that, try to get a work study role related to your choice. Finally, use ChatGPT to brainstorm.

Great question Sydney! I am excited for you. Good luck!
