Will I be able to find a career in broadcast jouralism that truly excites me and still gives me a healthy work-life balance?
I'm a Senior in HS and I dream of being on tv as a newsporter. I would love to be the next anchor on the Today's show or Good Morning America. I know that comes with a lot of hard work.

Hi Zaidee, what an exciting goal. You are right, its a lot of hard work but the interesting thing about work life balance is when the work is something that truly speaks to you, I think it becomes less of an issue. When the work life balance is wrong, its often because we find the work draining, unfulfiling or stressful (in a negative way, sometimes positive stress gives us that get up and go, as long as we then take good care of our health)
There is no doubt its a very competitive field, so in the early years of a career in the media, it will take long hours and dedication.
A great way to see if it's going to be for you is start to get involved in local media, thinking about something you could podcast about, which would help develop your presenting, editing and publishing skills (it could even be a podcast about your journey). Developing the habit of regularly writing and publishing is so useful in the long run as well as establishing a brand and creating a portfolio. Also, if there are any local broadcasters in your area, approach them to ask about their journey, see what work experience opportunities there are at local stations.
Good luck and looking forward to seeing you on TV in the future!

In each working career, work life balance we can well manage if we understand what the 1st priority is we should do. Some time we have to spend more time in the work but some time personal life, it is depending on the situation we face.

Hi Zaidee, you're correct that broadcast journalism has a tough schedule. You'll likely work unusual and long hours. However, if you love it, the job can be fulfilling, rewarding, and even fun. I spent 10 years as a TV news producer, where each day was fresh, different, and exciting. Eventually, I wanted a better work-life balance, but I remember my time in TV news fondly. Remember, you can always change paths. The skills you gain are priceless and can help you in other careers.
