How can I shape a medical career that not only treats illness but also dismantles the systemic barriers that create it? #Spring25

This question reflects my desire to pursue medicine as both a healer and an advocate—someone who not only addresses individual patient needs but also works to reform the broader social and structural determinants of health that perpetuate inequity.

Allie’s Answer

This is an excellent question! Have you considered looking into public health? Public health is all about helping whole communities and stopping problems before they start. It’s based on making sure everyone has a fair chance at being healthy and understanding what affects our health. Public health and medicine work closely together; medicine helps individuals, while public health focuses on prevention and speaking up for what's right. No matter which path you choose, joining an advocacy group for a cause you care about or becoming part of a membership organization is a fantastic idea!
