Sneha’s Answer

Hey Michelle! One of the hardest parts of applying for jobs in the business world is standing out in a large, competitive pool of applicants who may have similar qualifications. It can also be tough to figure out which roles truly fit your interests, especially when job descriptions sound vague or broad. To overcome these obstacles, focus on building a strong, tailored resume and cover letter, networking intentionally, and gaining real-world experience through internships, projects, or leadership roles. Don’t be afraid to reach out to professionals for informational interviews—they can help clarify your path and even open doors. Finding the right job may take time, but with patience, self-reflection, and consistency, you’ll discover a path that aligns with both your strengths and goals. Good luck!

Hi Michelle!
One of the toughest parts of job hunting is dealing with the competition. Even with a strong resume and great interview skills, it's important to remember that rejection doesn't always reflect your abilities or anything you did wrong. It’s completely normal to feel disappointed, but try not to let it discourage you or take it personally. Keep going—if you’re doing all the right things, and the right opportunity will come along. Good Luck!

Mahen’s Answer

Hi Michelle,

Echoing what others have already said, while it's easier to spot openings in the job market it has become harder to distinguish yourself from the competition. This increased competition places a greater emphasis on networking and researching (the job, company and career).

Use all of your available resources (LinkedIn, alumni networks, professors, personal connections) to research opportunities, conduct informational interviews and seek advice.

Ultimately getting your first job out of college is all about playing a numbers game. That first job is a stepping stone in your career where you learn more about what you like or what you want to do.

Good luck!

Amber’s Answer

Hi Michelle, as others have said--it's incredibly difficult to stand out in a giant pool of equally qualified candidates, especially if you're just starting out. If you're still at university, my advice is to take advantage of on-campus career fairs and land yourself an internship. I cannot stress how helpful these things are. Both my brothers and I got our internships, which later turned into full-time positions, through on-campus recruiting, and we didn't even go to fancy schools. While you're at these fairs, don't forget to also collect the recruiters' contact information and check in with them periodically--even if it's just for a coffee chat. A friend of mine got his first job out of law school through networking with someone from a firm. Not long after the initial networking event, the firm had an urgent need to fill a vacancy and my friend's contact at the firm thought of him and recommended him to the hiring team. I'm not saying networking always works, but sometimes it does help! Once you have a foot in the door and perhaps even a few years of experience under your belt, it would be much easier to transition to other positions within the business world.

Good luck!
