Mark’s Answer
When I moved into a dorm as a freshman in college, a colleague of my mother's who had just graduated suggested that I keep my door open when unpacking. People drifted into my room to say hi. Most of the friendships petered out after a while as people went in different directions, but it really helped me out tremendously.

- Join as many clubs as you think might interest you. You can only commit to a few timewise. That is where you'll find friends with common interests.
- Talk to your professors. I didn't do this and I regret it. You don't have to be bffs with all of your teachers, but you might need them to write a recommendation or for career advice, so build relationships with teachers you connect with.
- Go to office hours! Professors care and take note of who goes to office hours. Also helps build a good relationship.
- Take advantage of your academic advisor. Utilize them to make sure you're taking the right classes, are on track to graduate, etc.
- Visit the career center for internship/job resources
- Get a good laptop, backpack, and shoes. You walk a lot.
- If you're used to a soft bed, get a mattress topper.
- Do well in your classes. Classes will only get harder!
Freshman year is the time to try things out and figure out what works for you. You'll do great!
