Hi Oleisy,

College is undoubtedly a meaningful journey—full of growth, learning, and yes, a fair share of stress. Some stress can be harmful, like peer pressure, while other types, such as preparing for finals, can actually motivate you in a positive way. The key is learning to recognize where your energy is best spent and focusing on what truly matters.

One of the best tools for managing stress is effective time management. Something that really helped me was setting reminders on my phone for all assignment deadlines at the very start of the semester. This gave me enough time to plan ahead—whether it was studying, researching, or writing a paper—so I never felt overwhelmed at the last minute.

And don’t forget to take breaks! Stepping away to recharge is essential. Most colleges also offer a wide range of support services—everything from wellness and recreation to student involvement and academic resources. Be sure to take advantage of them—they’re there to help you succeed.

On the first day of each class you will receive your syllabus which will list all assignments and readings and projects for the entire semester. Plan ahead. Sit down with all of your assignments and make yourself one calendar so you can keep track of what’s due and when. It is likely that you will have overlapping project dates or exams to study for especially during the end of the semester. Dont wait to start things! I’ve been teaching college courses for years and one thing I always tell my students is to get started on the bigger projects and things the day the instructor tells you about it. Students often wait until the last minute and then try to cram in an entire project at once. This becomes a very stressful event! If you take some time at the start of the semester to plan out your time, you will be able to accomplish all that needs to get done while still giving yourself plenty of time!

When I was a student, one thing that really helped me was to schedule out my weeks. I knew when I had classes and I knew when I was scheduled to work my part-time job. So I also made a schedule of dedicated time where I would do homework and study. Often times I would even go to the library or a dedicated study area on campus for that period of time. Then it allowed me to also set aside time to enjoy friends and other campus activities which are also important!

The fact that you’re even asking this question upfront is a really great sign as it means you’re already thinking about the best way to structure your time and to manage all that you will have to do. College can be very stressful, but if you take some time to plan ahead, it’s also extremely doable and can be an awesome experience all around.
