What Projects Should I Add to My Resume? - Completed a Data Science Course but Not Getting Interview Calls

I'm a recent graduate who has completed a comprehensive data science course covering Python, SQL, machine learning, and data visualization. Despite this, I'm struggling to get my resume shortlisted for data analyst and data scientist roles.

Could you suggest the types of projects I should undertake and include on my resume to better showcase my skills and improve my chances of landing interviews?

Any advice on how to structure these projects or present them on my resume would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your guidance!

Hello Goku,

The problem you are referring to has 2 main aspects,

1) Your professional experience that is showcased in your resume might not match the job description. This could be specifically related to your resume or the type of jobs you are applying for online (LinkedIn, Indeed etc..). A few techniques you can use to improve your chances of curating your resume are the following:
-- Copy the job description into an AI engine such as ChatGPT or Gemini, and prompt the AI to create a word cloud from the job description. This will create a specific keyword map that is important for that specific job. Check your resume to ensure that you have all the necessary skills or keywords that will allow the Job filters in the company to allow your resume to be submitted to hiring manager
-- Check if you have any connections in the company, and always pursue a referral rather than job applications using online portals.
2) My suggestion to improve your professional experience is to look for temporary / contract or NGO work that can give you some real-world experience that you can use to highlight your resume. This will showcase to your prospective employers that you are proactive and working on real-world scenarios rather than projects provided during your academic studies.
I hope some of the techniques help you land on a new role. All the very best.

Regards,
Gokul J

Hi Goku - I echo many of the other comments, I would add to ensure you are tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for. Review your resume, even use an AI tool like ChatGPT to ensure it's concise and outcome based. What I mean by that, don't tell me what you did, tell me how you did it and what was the outcome, use specifics, metrics etc!

James’s Answer

Hey Goku,

In addition to what Gokulnath said, it might not be exactly the resume or specific projects but in my experience it’s also about how you tell your story. Without having seen your resume, my advice is to focus your verbiage on value creation, insights delivered, how closely you worked with business partners. The types of projects that hiring managers value will differ depending on the company.

You've already made great progress by completing a data science course. Now, it's time to shine by working on real-world projects. Dive into public datasets on Kaggle.com, create dashboards, and build models that tackle real issues. Share your work on GitHub to showcase your skills. Update your resume with bullet points that emphasize your achievements, like model accuracy or insights you've discovered. Consider volunteering or joining open-source projects to gain more experience.

If you can, investing in a professional resume writer can be very beneficial. I spent about $300, and it made my resume so impressive that others started using my format! While it's not necessary, if your resume isn't getting noticed, it might be worth considering. There are also more affordable options available. My resume writer was fantastic; she interviewed me to truly capture my personality, goals, and achievements, making me proud of my resume. I've landed the job I wanted and received multiple offers. I hope you find your path and achieve success too!
