What are career and research opportunities attainable with a degree in Physics, a minor in data science, and computer science or coding experience?

I am a high school senior planning to pursue a physics major and a data science minor. I also have an intermediate and growing experience with coding in Java and Python. What are some careers, preferably ones involving physics research, I can expect with my degree and experience?

It's fantastic that you're thinking about career options right from the start. One of the smartest moves you can make is to apply for internships. Some of these opportunities are available as early as your first summer in college. Internships offer a firsthand look at the working world that you can't get just from research. Plus, in many fields, having one or two internships on your resume can make it much easier to land a job after college. You should also spend some time on career websites like Indeed. Check out jobs that catch your eye and see what skills and degrees they ask for. Does it match your degree? Do they want advanced degrees? Are there extra classes you can take to build your skills? Look for patterns, and these will guide you on your learning journey.

That’s a strong combination — physics and data science open a lot of exciting doors. If you stick with that path, you could go into careers like computational physicist, data scientist for physics research labs, machine learning engineer for scientific applications, or even work in areas like astrophysics data analysis (NASA hires for that!). Your coding skills in Python and Java will be especially valuable for building simulations, processing experimental data, and modeling physical systems. If you’re interested in research, national labs, universities, and private R&D firms would all be great targets. I'd recommend getting involved in research projects or internships early on — hands-on experience will make a huge difference.

With a Physics major, Data Science minor, and coding skills in Python and Java, you can pursue careers in:

Physics Research – Labs, universities, or agencies like NASA and CERN.

Computational Physics – Simulations, modeling, or scientific computing.

Data Science & AI in Science – Analyzing big data from experiments or telescopes.

Software Engineering or R&D – Especially in tech, aerospace, or scientific tools.

Quant Roles – In finance or analytics using physics-based models.

Build projects, seek internships early, and join research programs to strengthen your profile for both careers and grad school.
